True Nas Scale issues

Hi there True nas Scale was running fine on prox mox, however ever within turenas scale console i did a sudo apt get update etc and since then true nas vm wont run , it was all set up and running and cant figure it out as to what went wrong. Can anyone who uses Team viewer remote in to see if they can fix it for me.

Add SSD to SM 2U Chassis

I have the following chassis: Supermicro 2U (CSE-826A-R1200LPB) 12x 3.5" Drive Bays

This unfortunately is the chassis that does not have the two 2.5" trays on the back.

I would like to add at least one 2.5" SSD.

Can I retrofit this chassis to have those 2 bays on the back?
Would it be worth using a caddy adapter like this one from Fenlink?
Or am I best off looking to...

Nvidia gpu passthrough for VM?

I tried to passthrough an nvidia gpu to a Windows VM, and ran into a few issues. I finally got it working in a very hacky way, so I was wondering if my approach can be improved, and if this is something that TrueNAS Scale will be able to support at all in the future.

First issue is that detaching an Nvidia card from the host (to make it available for VM's) is impossible, because the card is used by nvidia-device-plugin, which is used to allow gpu passthrough for docker. I did not find a...

use cron to run jail commands

Hi all,

It may sound stupid, but I could not find this in the docs. I intend to periodically run commands into each and every jail.
Cron seems to be the easy way.
Can you please advise? a simple example will help me understand
Thanks

Is pcpartpicker.com compatibility check broken for server hardware?

I was putting together pricing for a new server with an X11SSM-F-O motherboard and a Xeon E3-1230 v6 CPU.

I find pcpartpicker.com convenient for listing out pricing from various sources at once. But, if the compatibility filter is on it's showing the above two items as not compatible.

Am I missing something?

Help with choose correct storage configuration

Hello guys,

I have 4 x 6Tb with 7200rpm (3 x HGST HUS726060ALE614 + 1 x HGST HUS726T6TALE6L4) and 4 x 4Tb with 5400rpm (WDC WD40EFRX-68WT0N0) disks for new NAS installation.

My requirements: raid6 protection level, maximum space, low perfomance degradation and combined in one pool for comfortable management (if possible)

I think about few options:

1. 4 x 6Tb RAIDZ2 pool and 4 x 4Tb RAIDZ2 combined in one pool
2. 8 x 4Tb RAIDZ2 pool and 4 x 2Tb RAID10 in two pool
3. 4 x 6Tb RAIDZ1 pool...

Need another backup plan after Synology failure Part 1

I'm going to do this in two parts/questions in order to keep my questions separate to make it more understandable for me and others.

The Synology never worked well for Rsync backups. Net speed Freenas to Synology was ~7MB Not manageable on terabytes of data. A great deal of testing and research revealed that Synalogys' implementation is <= to poo. I tried various protocols but never got over 22MB. Testing on Win 10 in and out of Freenas could hit 100MB+. There are hundreds of forum...

Containers: Minimum node port 9000?

Hi.
I saw TrueNAS Scale as a way of migrating all my Docker containers over from a Ubuntu server, and at the same time have a great storage server (now running 7x2 TB pool).

But are now testing containers, and see that I cant add ports lower than 9000.

Are running multiple containers with ports below 9000, one example is the Unifi controller which...

Fails to boot - Can't import boot-pool

Edit: turns out that it's failing to import the boot-pool by name but continuing to attempt to boot up, so the screen is flooded with it trying to initialize my 16 HDDs

Ok this one confuses me... I installed SCALE on my home server so I could help with testing. It installed just fine, but when I went to boot up the installed system it crashes citing something about a SATA error or timeout but it goes by too quickly for me to see. It initializes the other devices connected to my HBA and then...

Not sure where to start.

I'm completely new to the world of NAS. I've been doing some reading on it and every time I read more, I end up thinking a different direction fits my needs better. I have an old computer laying around the house that I'd like to turn into a NAS for some file backups, but mostly as a media server. I was thinking RAID 5/50. Now it's looking like ZFS Z1 is where I want to go. I'm in the process of running ethernet through the house set up to an 8 way switch. Attached to his/hers PCs and TVs in...

Updates to Hard Drive Standby Behavior in TrueNAS 12?

Hi TrueNAS folks,

I am new to TrueNAS and have learned a tremendous amount by browsing and searching these forums, as well as stack overflow and the like. I'm hoping someone here can help me out with what is likely a very simple issue.

I would like to have the four drives in my main pool spin down when they are not being used. I have read all the commentary suggesting this is not a good idea and so forth, but I'd still like to explore the possibility. For context, this NAS is set up as an...

Need help to migrate Certificate Import from API 1.0 to 2.0

Hi,
My Python script to import the certificate using API 1.0 stopped working after I upgraded FreeNAS 11 to TrueNAS 12.

My Python code used to look like the following and the status code was 201 if it was imported successfully.

Code:
r = requests.post(
  'http://' + HOST + '/api/v1.0/system/certificate/import/',
  auth=(USER, PASSWORD),
  headers={'Content-Type': 'application/json'},
  data=json.dumps({
  "cert_name": cert_name,

Stuck at alert.process_alerts

Every now and then my truenas server runs alert.process_alerts process and it stays at 0% and doesn't make any progress. What is this and why does it get stuck? It's happened after creating a replication task and never actually completes the creation of that replication task, although i'm not sure if it's related. When it's stuck like this, I'm unable to see my zpools, or dashboard. I can do some things like view running services but i cannot start any services.

Anyone know what's going...

Drives keep dying (Bad luck, or am I killing them?)

I was hoping I wouldn't need to return here for a while, but alas, I've had yet another drive fail on me. At first I assumed it was just another bad drive before noticing a similarity to the last failure (which was just a month ago): Both drives were connected to the last power sata power connector (top-most in the picture below).

Is it bad practice to use three spinning disks on a single connector like this? I'm using an EVGA 750w G3, so I didn't have another way of connecting the drives...

Slow replication via SSH. High CPU usage despite AES-ni

Hi,

I'm currently running into performance issues during replication of datasets between two hyperconverged truenas boxes. I've already checked the usual topics. Here's a quick summary:
Source machine:
  • Latest Truenas running within latest ESXi 7.0
  • E5-1650 v4, 2 vCPUs for Truenas
  • Supermicro X10SRH-CLN4F, SAS3-controller passed through to TrueNAS via vt-d
  • SAS3-EL1 Backplane
  • 64 GB DDR4 ECC RAM, 32GB reserved for TrueNAS
  • Boot-Datastore running from Intel M.2 SSD
  • 6x...

FreeNAS to O3X Replication: SSH+Netcat errors

For a several years now I've been running a Thunderbolt 2 RAID0 (4x4TB) connected to my Mac (SoftRAID), backed up to a FreeNAS box with a RAIDZ2 (6x4TB). A different project here opened my eyes to how performant ZFS replication is compared to filesystem backups, so I'm now experimenting with OpenZFS on OS X (O3X). After making a second backup on local storage, I've rebuilt the Thunderbolt array as a 4x4TB stripe in O3X, and am currently replicating the FreeNAS backup back to the TB array...

Debian VM with GUI

I'm trying to install a Debian 10 VM in freenas... But can't seem to get the Gui working... I always used Debian without Gui... But now I need the Gui because I need a service that only runs in Gui. But I can't get the Gui working... I can't add it to a existing VM, not even in a new VM... It installs all OK, but then the Gui never starts.

Any ideia on this?
Thank you

Introducing the new TrueNAS CLI

SCALE Users,

Pleased to let users of the nightly train know, that work on a new CLI interfaces has now landed in the SCALE nightly images, and will be available in the upcoming 21.02 release in the next few weeks.

So what is a CLI you may ask? Simply put, its a way from a command-line to interface directly with the TrueNAS middleware, using the same API calls which the Web interface uses. Of course a picture is worth a thousand words, and an animated picture even more-so:

What can I build for $1000?

So I'm currently using my old gaming computer as a home storage server, running CentOS, if I remember right. I've been wanting to build more of a advanced storage server. I think I decided on ZFS and some ssd caching. It was a while ago that I originally looked into this. I currently have no raid, just a bunch of drives that I've bought. Cheapest GB per $. I buy them as I need them. I have some other SSD's I can pull from unused computers, but they're only 128gb if I remember right...
