How to set up Time Machine over SMB in Jail

$

I will flesh this out as I have time. I have TM over SMB working in a samba jail on my FreeNAS server

Step 1: Create Jail
Step 2: Pkg update in jail
Step 3: Portsnap update and extract
Step 4: Add storage to jail under /srv/TimeMachine
Step 5: Copy samba patches to /usr/ports/net/samba46/files

- patch-libcli__smb__smb2_create_ctx.h
- patch-source3__modules__vfs_fruit.c
- patch-source3__smbd__avahi_register.c
Step 6: Compile samba from ports with...

Flashing 9211-8i

I've been trying to flash this card in IT P20 mode but can't get FreeDos to recognize the commands.  I downloaded: 9211_8i_Package_P20IR_IT_Firmware_BIOS_for_MSDOS_Windows.zip
and loaded it onto a USB drive.  The computer boots up and I get the following when I enter the command.  Can anyone see a problem from this screenshot?  I have no drives loaded on the system and only the 1 USB with the above package.  The motherboard uses BIOS with no reference to UEFI.  During boot, the LSI...

[HOW-TO] How-to Boot Linux VMs using UEFI

There have been a number of threads were people have failed to boot a Linux VM after the installation phase using the webUI of FreeNAS 11 nightly, finding themselves stuck in the EFI shell and not knowing how to proceed nor how to avoid this happening each time their VM is started.

It has been sugested elsewhere that this is due a grub error, or a grubx64.efi file which is missing or in the wrong place, or you must create a startup.nsh file or change the boot order in the EFI shell.  If...

Anyway to convert my iohyve VMs from a MBR to a GPT partition table?

Is there anyway to convert and MBR partition table to a GPT partition table within an iohyve created VM? Or would it just be easier to start over?  Normally on a bare metal machine I would boot into gparted and make the modifications, however I don't think this will work with iohyve.

[How To] Hard Drive Burn-In Testing

jgreco did a nice system build/test/burn-in guide here, but I (and many others) found the details a bit lacking in the hard drive section. He mentions S.M.A.R.T. tests, but doesn't go over how to run them, or how to view the results, etc. and then just kinda throws around dd commands without a lot of explanation there either. Yes, this information is available elsewhere, but for...

Unable to boot from USB after creating Freenas 9.3 installation

Hey,

I'm new to Freenas and just getting started.

I've created an USB Device containing freenas 9.3,
(loaded the ISO Via IPMI and pointed the installer to install on DA6 which is my 16GB Silicon Power DOK).

I've disabled XHCI and XHCI Handoff but then i boot from USB
i just get a blank screen with "-" blinking.

I'm using the latest BIOS from 24/4/14.

What am I doing wrong?

I'm running an X10SLL-F (c2 stepping), Xen 1230V3, 16GB ECC RAM
and M1015 with 6x3TB RED/Green drives.

Thanks!

Some Vmware snapshots failing in FreeNAS

I setup VMware snapshots for my ESXi box, however some of them seem to be failing and I do not know how to figure out why. There doens't seem to eb any relation between teh VMs that dial and the ones that succeed.

I can log into ESXi and create a snapshot successfully for these VMs, but they don't seem to snapshot in FreeNAS.

I get this error:

Code:

First FreeNAS Build – Feedback Please!

I am a newbie to FreeNAS and this is my first FreeNAS build. I’m currently using a NAS Server I built several years ago using Windows Server 2012 Storage Spaces to serve up storage for datastores in ESXi as well as file shares for my movies being streamed via KODI.  I can provide more details on this setup if needed.

I would like your opinion on the components being used in the FreeNAS build. These are components I acquired over the years and was just laying around the house. Here is the...

update without disconnecting everyone

Is there a scenario/setup where you can update a FreeNAS server without having to disconnect all the clients for a reboot?

I have production servers in use 24x7 and finding a time to disconnect all the iSCSI and NFS mounts for a reboot is next to impossible.

Am I going about this all wrong? Maybe a better method for updating?

Thanks,
Chuck

Slideshow explaining VDev, zpool, ZIL and L2ARC and other newbie mistakes!

I've put together a Powerpoint presentation(and PDF) that gives some useful info for newbies to FreeNAS. I decided to create this slideshow because in the last 5 months I've been on this forum I've seen a lot of people confused about vdevs, zpools, zils, l2arcs, etc. Hopefully we can put to rest alot of the confusion once and for all.

We get a large amount of duplicate threads with the same questions being...

Hi! I have the following strucutre:

I have a MEDIA dataset at /mnt/vol_1/MEDIA in my Storage, with media as group and user owner.

I also have a plex and transmission jail. Both installed clean, nothing changed. Now, I am trying to achieve that both of them points to the MEDIA folder. Plex worked just fine without doing anything, but Transmission gives me a permission denied error.

I searched a lot, but did not find any post/tutorial which could solve my problem entirely. Some would help...

zfs pool replication via sneakernet

Hello:

I have two FreeNAS servers (9.10) in different countries, let's call them A&B.

I want to have them replicate each other, and I can run that with test servers just fine.

But B is new/empty and A has 6 TB of data and a slow internet connection (just 1Mb/s upload), so it is really a non-starter to do the first replication via SSH, and I cannot bring server B to location A or vice-versa.

I saw this post and understand that process fine and have tested with test-data on server B....

Hello:

I've been building PCs since 6502 days (anyone remember Ohio Scientific?) and administered my first (SCO) Linux box in 1991. have been running FreeNAS at home for a little over 2 years, but only recently really started to learn it (jails, etc.) in the last 6 months or so.

I live in Southeast Asia, both Singapore and Thailand.

Variance in Drive Size Allowance

I have a friend who is a FreeBSD purist, he insists on using gpart to leave 100MB reserved/unused at the end of every drive in a zfs array to account for possible variances in number of sectors on drives from different manufacturers.  He tells me that if I replace a drive with one that is not identical (same part number), there is a possibility the replacement will fail if it is a few sectors too small.  So, should I go to a shell and issue the commands to partition off 100MB or so at the...
