Hi folks,

I'm building a 10 drive config (8 HDDs, 2 SSDs for boot) and looking for PSU & cabling advice.

Case: Fractal Design Node 804
MB: Supermicro X11SSL-CF
CPU: Intel Xeon E3-1220 V6 Kaby Lake 3.0 GHz LGA 1151 72W

Copying Datasets to New Machine With zfs send/recv

I'm not quite grokking the semantics of copying datasets around using zfs send and recv.  Specifically, I think my familiarity with rsync is causing me confusion when thinking about copying datasets.

As I understand it, zfs send and recv operate on snapshots.  This seems simple enough:  Create snapshot of source dataset, zfs send it to a stream (over the network), zfs recv the stream into a destination dataset.  That...

Boot Volume Degraded Need advice please

Hi all, real quick intro, FreeNAS newb, linux beginner at best.

Recently moved to a FreeNAS setup at the house for main data storage, and so far its been great.  Got a few plugins going even and really enjoying it,  however I keep getting failures and even the occasional crash from it.

I installed on a matching pair of SanDisk Cruser flash drives, day 1 went great no problems, day 2 experienced my first failure, but honestly pulling the offending drive, and replacing with a different, it...

Data gone?

Hi all,

need some advise (HELP!).

After a hardware fail my pool (2 x 2TB drives RAID1) became degraded but data was still available (cifs). Nothing i did changed that. I could not make the pool back to healthy.
If i remove one of the the drives, the data was still available.
So i had a wonderful idea: Remove the second drive, conecting it to a win system and erase the partition. I was expecting that when conecting back to the nas the system would automaticaly repar the pool back to...

How To Install Plex in a FreeNAS 11.0 Jail:

First off, navigate to your FreeNAS WebUI in your browser.

Next, click on the "Jails" button on the top bar, and then click on the "Configuration" tab.

From there, select a "Jail Root" that is suitable to where you want your jails to be stored. Then click on "Advanced Mode" to expose the...

SMB Service will NOT start

I am thinking Version11.1-U4 is a little goofy. I'm running into little corky issues all over the place.

For one I can't even start the SMB service. I have even tried to start the service from the terminal and had no luck. Is anybody else having these issues?

NAS for Video Files - Just a RANT

This is off topic and just  weird thing but for some reason it just drives me nuts that people spend a ton of money on huge storage (20TB+), good ZFS protected storage just to save video content.  I guess if it were part of the company to store and serve up video content then it would be okay.  I guess I just don't have enough disposable money.  And I'm not aiming my comments to anyone specific, it is just a general rant that I can't wrap my head around, but maybe someone could get me...

Writing speed depends on install location

Hey FreeNas!

Yesterday I installed FreeNAS 11 on two thumb drives attached to a server that handles 12 sata disks behind a storage controller configured there as a raid0 array and in FreeNAS itself configured as an raidZ3.

Somehow the writing speed that it produces was around 40 mb/s, the same writing speed that the USB2 produces. After which I installed FreeNAS again on a mini-hdd, which produces a writing speed of around 100mb/s.

In short my question is: Why is FreeNAS it's writing...

eBay/Amazon Question

Near the end of 2017, I purchased an HPE Proliant ML10 Gen9 and some accessories for a FreeNAS box.  After I purchased it, I decided to return but apparently HPE has a no return policy, even though unopened with factory seals.  I was unaware of this prior to purchase.

Some might ask, "Why not set-up a FreeNAS?"  I have so many projects going already.  I do not have time for another one.

Now, I'm looking to sell on eBay/Amazon.  While I've sold some stuff on eBay, I have not sold on Amazon....

Network/Hardware changes causing issues?

So, I recently changed my 2 Wifi router network to a Google OnHub (TP-Link) and a Google Wifi puck using the "mesh".
For the many months prior to that, once I had gotten everything set up network wise, everything worked like a charm.
I followed Fester's and a few other people's setup info. Had Plex working w/o issues.

Router IP 192.168.0.1
DHCP Address Pool 192.168.0.100 thru 192.168.0.149

Once I changed to the OnHub, I went into settings and tried to mirror those same reservations....

RancherOS Issues (web interface sometimes not coming up, cannot upgrade, etc)

Hi guys,

I've been running 11.1.U4 for a while now, after finally transitioning off Coral and back to jails, and then out of Jails and back to Docker (haha). However, I've come into issues with the RancherOS implementation in FreeNAS. Specifically:

- Oftentimes, after rebooting the VM, the web interface (https://<IP>:8080) doesn't come up. The only solution to this seems to be waiting a while to see if it's coming to life, and if it isn't, rebooting until it does. Obviously this is quite...

Hello, I am new to freenas and have a setup based on the older hardware recomendations.

Super Micro X9SCM-F
Intel(R) Xeon(R) CPU E3-1230 V2 @ 3.30GHz
2x Samsung 8GB DDR3 1600 ECC UDIMM M391B1G73QH0-YK0 SuperMicro MEM-DR380L-SL02-EU16
2x 4TB WD red
PSU 700w (will be upgraded)

I have installed Freenas 11.1 to a 16gb usb stick and it boots and all. But only 1 of my WD red disks shows up when I go to Volume manager. I know both works since i have tested them serperatly in another computer....

NFS with user credentials

Hello,

I am creating NFS sharing and would like to add user credentials in there.

However, it looks like NFSv4 can do but it require kerberos.   Searching some material it looks I need to setup another KDC like using FreeIPA.  Rather then setup within FreeNAS itself.

Could you please advise what is the move simple way for NFS sharing with user credentials?

Thanks!

Does anyone on here have extensive working knowledge of lightroom in conjunction with a NAS of any type? Obviously I will be using FreeNAS, but I am very curious about how I should try and set things up.

Currently, I have a horrible workflow. So lets not worry about how its set up now.

My plan is to put all of my photos (about 1 TB worth of pictures) on my freenas box. I am not sure how I would go about networking for this, maybe just set up my photo directory as a network storage drive,...

Intel Xeon W? Now we're talking!

Good news for those of us who felt that Xeon Scalable was overpriced overkill:

https://www.servethehome.com/new-intel-xeon-w-processors-for-professional-workstations-announced/

The Xeon W line is the successor to Xeon E5-16xx. It uses the same socket as consumer high-end (LGA2066). Four channels of DDR4, 48 PCIe lanes, same microarchitecture as Xeon Scalable (Skylake with the new cache distribution and mesh network instead of the old ring bus).

The disappointment comes in the...

Hello all,

This is my first post to this forum. My history regarding ZFS is from Nexenta and have now been getting inspired to update and move to FreeNAS that I had thought a few years ago already as my next server OS.

I have to say that the amount of information that has been generated here in the resources section, guides and FAQs is overwhelming. They have been a huge help in getting familiar with FreeNAS and its requirements... Thanks to all that have contributed to these resources....

Splitting a volume so I can remove a disk

I have one volume I've named 'D'
I have two disks in this volume, one 1TB HDD, and one 2TB HDD.

My data takes up 1.6TB. I started with the 1TB HDD as that was what I had at the time, then I bought the 2TB HDD, and added to the system a month later for more storage. Now I'm realizing the error in my ways, and I'd like to move all of my data onto the 2TB HDD, and then make the 1TB HDD a separate Volume, so I can add/replace either disk at will. my data only takes up 1.6TB so I'm assuming it...
