Updating from Nexenta to a new, upgraded FreeNAS build

Hello all,

This is my first post to this forum. My history regarding ZFS is from Nexenta and have now been getting inspired to update and move to FreeNAS that I had thought a few years ago already as my next server OS.

I have to say that the amount of information that has been generated here in the resources section, guides and FAQs is overwhelming. They have been a huge help in getting familiar with FreeNAS and its requirements... Thanks to all that have contributed to these resources....

Running win10 from a 32gb usb WITHOUT WinToGo (OFFLINE 80tb FreeNas on vBox)

I'm running win10 from a flash drive WITHOUT WinToGo, I installed vBox and created a few boot.vhd to install FreeNas and create an OFFLINE DataCenter for personal use.

I'm using:

10x8tb hard drives,
01x32gb lexar flash drive,

i7-3770cpu
32gb corsair ram

Thing is: I get a "Memory Error" message everytime I boot (and once a while)...

Tested my hardware... Issue is Win10, vBox or FreeNas related

my DATA might soon be gone.

FN11 -- swap_pager_getswapspace(#): failed.

I logged into the FN11 webui to create a jail today, and noticed a *lot* of these entries.

I haven't seen them before, and have made no hardware changes in a couple of years.

I've attached a picture of the graph of my swap space as well, but it doesn't look like it was full unless I'm misreading.

Does anyone have any ideas?

Code:

Hi there, new users to freemas here. I am trying to setup a file server that also backups to the cloud.

What I want to do is have a data on one hdd that replicates to a second drive on the same server and then this second drive backs up to Google drive as an off site backup.

Reason is I want to store some files for a program on a server ehiwhich  program will constantly use. These files are then copied to a second drive and then backed up to my Google drive account. I am currently storing...

2 × 3 TB, 2 × 4 TB disks... How should I arrange my storage?

Hi guys.

I've had the FreeNAS system listed in my signature for a while. I recently purchased two 4 TB 7200 RPM HGST Deskstar NAS drives, in addition to the two 3 TB 5400 RPM WD Red drives already in my system. The latter two are arranged in a single mirrored vdev. How do you guys should I add on the two new drives to maximise storage and redundancy?

Thanks very much.

Repeatedly getting ARP errors after swapping FIOS router for firewall and keeping gateway IP

Switched out the Verizon Fios Gateway for an appliance firewall.  I set the LAN port on the firewall to 192.168.1.1 which is what the FIOS gateway had for LAN.

Now I'm getting repeated errors in my log:

Apr 27 10:52:40 Basement kernel: arp: [MAC address] attempts to modify permanent entry for 192.168.1.1 on epair4b

These go on every 4 seconds creating 2 log entries.

Now in Arp table, there is no epair4b so I suspect there's an interface trying to write itself into the ARP table, and the...

Sorry if this was already answered elsewhere (was having no luck with search results urls working this morning)

I'm testing out setting quotas on User Home Directories and figure that I can easily set them with something like:
Code:
zfs set userquota@"Domain\User"=50G Data/Users

Only thing is that I am not making a User's Home folder the normal way.  While there will be a DataStore and Share for "Users"; it is simply a Folder created via Windows Explorer that I will set the initial...

Replace VDEV in pool

I currently have a zpool with two vdevs: it began years ago as a single vdev with (8) 2tb drives, eventually had each of the drives replaced with 4tb drives, then was expanded by adding a second vdev of (6) 4tb drives. So I currently have:
zpool1:
  vdev1 - raidz2 with (8) 4tb drives
  vdev2 - raidz2 with (6) 4tb drives

I'm going to step through a few upgrades, the first of which will be replacing each of the 4tb drives in vdev1 with 8tb drives. When that's settled and known good, I'd like...

I hope this is the correct spot to put this. I'm having issues with FreeNAS 11.1-U4 detecting all of my drives as it will only detect 6 of 15.

I have a Dell R710 with an MD1000 and all 15 slots are filled with 2 TB drives. The MD1000 is connected with an External Mini-SAS HD SFF-8644 to Mini-SAS SFF-8470 Cable via an LSI SAS8300-8e. All 15 drives are detected from the BIOS and are available for boot selection or when using other operating systems such as FreeBSD 11.x or CentOS 7.

Know When a power outage started

I've had a power blackout at my home where my freenas server is. This morning i've received an email from the server :
System booted at Fri Apr 27 09:12:58 2018 was not shut down properly

So I know at 9:12 the power came back. But is there a way to know when was the power outage began?

In the "reporting" Page of the gui there is only infornation from that time, and I needed to know how long lasted that power outage.

Thank you...

Several things are not working, monitor hookup and serial interface does not work.  Yet we can get to one of the nic interface via dhcp.  Unfortunately the web interface is very unfamiliar.  ASRock is the web interface able to be reached, yet this was not the interface I had worked in previously.  It was a freenas interface.

Is the system caput or can I recover from this interface?

Hey all, building my first ESXi with FreeNAS pretty soon. I purchased this r710 for $50 a while back and will be taking it apart to build. Just seeing if it would work fine. Motherboard will be purchased separately since I don't want to use the server chassis.

cpu: 2x Xeon E6520

Hi:
I am running FreeNas 9.10, I have 6 3T WD Red drives. I am getting the alert shown below. I wanted to run S.M.A.R.T test using SSH from the GUI. When I select Shell from the Gui and type: "smartctl  -t /dev/ada5" and I hit "enter" I do not get a response. I could run it from "Task", but I only wan to run it once. How do I do it?

VM cannot ping freenas therefor cannot mount cifs

Hi

FreeNAS version 11.1-U4

My freenas is 192.168.1.10
My VM 192.168.1.11 gateway 192.168.1.1 (router)

I cannot ping my freenas from the VM. I created it using the WYSIWYG wizard.

cat /etc/resolv.conf always shows (and overwrites) nameserver as 127.0.0.53

Router is pfsense. No DHCP. Only static IPs.

I can ping my windows machine from VM fine 192.168.1.8

Can't copy and paste through vnc so ifconfig highlights are:

inet 192.168.1.11
netmask 255.255.255.0
broadcast 192.168.1.255...

I have FreeNAS 11-stable running and bound to Windows Server 2016 successfully. Users and groups from AD show up in FreeNAS, and users can authenticate, but changes to group memberships in AD don't show up on the FreeNAS system. Can anyone tell me where I need to look in the log files to see what is going on?

Here's a screen shot of the AD group membership (I just added Carla Morrison to the group):

And here is output of /usr/bin/id from the FreeNAS system:...
