X11SSM-F FreeNAS Build Verification

So I've run this through PCPartPicker and a friend who has a FreeNAS box already running but I wanted some final verification before I take the plunge.  Budget is $2k. Use cases: Plex server (4-5 streams simultaneously max, regular load 2), TimeMachine back up for 2 Macs, general file server, NextCloud/OwnCloud, 3-4 VMs (windows 10 and a few linux flavors).  I'm expecting this build to last roughly 10 years and expect a couple drive failures along the way....

Need some opinions on a build that will replace a SAN.

Hi,

I want to replace an older SAN solution for a team of video editors (Adobe Premier etc).

Today there are 5 video editing workstations (3 Mac Pro's and 2 PC workstations) that are connecting to a SAN with iSCSI over 10GbE and to a fileserver (SMB) over 1GbE.
The SAN hosts individual "scratchdisks" to each workstation and a lager volume for shared material (only read rights to 4 of the 5 workstations).

This solution is not ideal and do not perform good enough. Backing up all this data...

Ok, so I am a noob, but I have the freenas all setup and working well with my movie & photo collection streaming to my kodi device, all in all very happy with that.

I had a bright idea of being able to backup my photos from my iPhone to me nice shiny NAS and I relaised I own a program called Photosync which is able to connect to a SMB share... Perfect :)

So I fill in all the details (IP address, username password etc) click done and I get the following error:

Can anyone help?  What am I missing?
Thx all,

Need help finding P14 LSI firmare and sas2flash version 14

I am trying to flash a new LSI SAS 92174i4e to it-mode and I need the sas2flash version 14 since this is an HP flashed card. The latest version P20 from LSI/Broadcom errors out when I try to update to the P20 2118it.bin. I found a thread on another forum where he used the P14 version (which apparently doesn't verify the white label manufacturer) and it recovered his card by allowing him to flash the version 20 firmware using the older version of sas2flash.

Question 1:

I have tried to find...

A sincere Happy Mothers Day to all of those women who are mothers that surf these forums and if you are a guy and his wife/girl recognizes this holiday, better make sure you are not in the dog house today.  I've already baked a cake (not bought a pre-made one) and done all the dishes.  Now I'm taking my gal out to a movie she wants to see.  Afterwards I'll be making dinner for her.  This is the least I can do.

I found this in the pfSense docs page, but I'm looking for validation before proceeding...

FreeNAS crashed after deleting large dataset, now stuck on "slow spa_sync"

Hi,

Earlier today I deleted a rather large dataset (16.2TB) from a 120TB pool.
A few hours later the server crashed, it would no longer respond to any input for at least an hour.
At this point I issued a hard reset (it would not respond to a soft one)

With IPMIview I managed to gather a few lines of the boot progress, sadly lots of stuff got printed over so this is not a full log.

But as you can see the...

SSD Not Listed for Install of FreeNAS OS

I built my installation disk as directed in the guide for version 11; however, when I start the install, the SSD is not listed for me to install the OS onto during setup.  I can only see the disks I plan to use for storage.  I'm sure it is something simple I am overlooking but I am getting very frustrated.  Thanks in advance for any assistance!

Nextcloud: Jail vs. VM

I want to install an instance of Nexcloud and would like to know the pro's and con's of installing it in a jail setting and a VM setting.  The basic understanding I have is that a VM is less likely to have issues during a FreeNAS update.  Whereas a jail, I've had issues in the past with system updates.

Thanks for any input and thoughts on this!

Folder Permissions Inheritance

I am trying to figure out how to force newly created files within a directory to gain the permissions in the parent directory. I am thinking ACL's is the solution from a bit of googling, but I am not sure and not familiar with that. More googling im sure would help, but is this what I am looking for?

The reason: I use syncthing to copy data from computer to computer and it appears as though any file it creates gets 755 and I would rather it be 770 like the parent directory. In all honesty,...

Large 36 x 12TB Build

Hey,

I have a build for which I need to ensure rebuilds do not impact the array, I assume I would be best of doing mirrored vdevs rather than RAIDZ2 or RAIDZ3 vdevs to reduce the impact of rebuilds?

The purpose of the array is a backup target, it's worth noting my backup software does perform consistency checks on the data, hence my worry about rebuilds impacting read/write speeds!

Also it worth having a NVMe PCIe slog? I need to ensure data is committed to the array without fail, I want...

I went over to someone's house and tried to show them a movie on my Plex server, which is hosted in my house. I could only get a 480p stream going and if I went to 1080p if refused to even load the movie. In my house, the movies loaded fine in 1080p.
(I am new to FreeNAS)
Speed test:
   My house: 60mbps - Upload
   Gf house: 150mbps - Download

My pc specs should be in the signature.

Thank you in advance :)

Hello,

I've been experiencing some problems with my Freenas server. When I run dmesg from the shell then I see a lot of cam status ATA status errors which I don't know what they mean. Here is a screenshot of it when it occured again. It does not always occur:

My first experience with ZFS came in last 2015 while working for a Boston company that made specialized video systems and traditional hardware RAID storage systems. I assisted a colleague in creating a new ZFS storage system using Solaris and napp-it and I’ve been in love with ZFS ever since…

I’ve had the experience of building a massive 1.2 PB system using Supermicro’s 96 disk chassis. As an alternative to Solaris, I have also used OmniOS until the end of their relationship with OmniTI a...
