OpenVPN setup guide for FreeNAS 11.2

Hi,

I am having trouble getting openvpn working in 11.2.
It was running in 11.1, but after the upgrade - it stopped, and now I cannot reinstall it again.

This is a guide I am trying to put together (from many different sources), if I should need to do it once again - and hopefully after I have this working - it will also be shared here.

Step 1:
Create new jail:
openvpn
IP: xx.xx.xx.xx
LAGG0
Select "Autostart"

Step 2:
Add mount point:
Source: /mnt/nas/backup/openvpn #This is a SMB share...

FreeNAS feature suggestion

When I first set up my FreeNAS and enabled encryption on my volumes, it wasn't clear that each VDed had a different GELI key, and that no matter which one you download, it's 'geli.key', so initially, I had only saved the one from the initial VDev. After learning that there are separate keys for each VDev, I saved the rest.

My suggestion, if it's possible, would be rather than have the keys export as 'geli.key' fora ll VDevs, have the keys export as 'geli_VDevName.key' or something along...

Single path to Multipath VDev migration

I searched around and really only came up with one 'relevant' thread that was almost four years old and didn't really have an answer. I'm running FreeNAS 11.1-U6 and have two shelves - the main one contains the processing power, controllers, etc and has a dual expander backplane which provides redundant connections to the two controllers, the second shelf is a JBOD unit that currently has a single expander backplane, but I've got a dual expander backplane coming for this one. Once the dual...

Last Minute Setup Help

For a bit of context I just built a Freenas system and just installed the latest version of Freenas (I think it's the December 5th release, so not technically latest I guess). The specs are as follows in case they are needed:

CPU: Intel Xeon 2650 V2
Motherboard: Supermicro X9 SRL-F
RAM: 64 gb ddr3 ECC 1333Mhz
Drive Controller: LSI H220
Drives: 6x Seagate Enterprise 4TB 7200 RPM (I forget the model)

I'm confident that I could set everything up but I'd like some input on "best" practice...

Zoneminder cannot add any cameras

Recently I tried to install the Zoneminder plugin on my FreeNAS 11.2 RC2 machine, but I ran into the following error:
SQL-ERR 'SQLSTATE[HY000]: General error: 1366 Incorrect integer value: '' for column 'V4LMultiBuffer' at row 1', statement was 'insert into Monitors set LinkedMonitors = '', [...]

After a bit of research I found the following post in the Zoneminder forums:

FreeNAS -> Help & Support -> New to FreeNAS?

I have a server with a fresh install of FreeNAS 11.2 that I plan to use for my SOHO network of Linux, Windows, macOS, and/or FreeBSD clients. I have created a pool. I would like to create private SMB/CIFS shares for each of four users, plus a common SMB/CIFS share that all users can read and write.

I appears that I need to create FreeNAS user accounts for each user. The Accounts -> Users -> Add dialog shows a default Home Directory of...

32GB USB as Install Disk Fails?

Since 11.2 release, I've tried to image the ISO to a 32GB USB flash drive from Win 7 on 4 drives, from 2 systems, using 3 different imagewriters (Win32DiskImager, Windows USB/DVD Tool, & Etcher) & Win 7 blue screens on creation every time or any time the disk is inserted after imaging. I didn't have any smaller flash drives to try (on the way) but assume Win 7 does not like the image file structure on such a large disk. On earlier releases (e.g., 11.1) I used smaller disks (4-8 GB) without...

How to replace harddisk on Proliant Gen8?

Hi there,

I want to replace a harddisk with a larger one in my Proliant Gen8 freenas server.
However, I cannot find any spare SATA ports besides the SATA ODD connector.

Since the proliant is fairly popular with freenas - can anyone tell me how people do this?

Thank you,
Christoph

NFS Permission Issues

At this point I have read the manual and searched around and I still can't figure this out. I trying to connect to a FreeNAS NFS export from an Arch Linux box. I setup the export on the NAS and it seems ok. On the nix box I can mount the export but I can't write anything. I also can't chown any of the files. This is on a home network so functionality is more important than security.

Here's how FreeNAS is configured:

Unable to install plugin EFAULT Exception: URLError

So my frustration level has peaked and I'm needing some help figuring this out. I'm trying to install plugins (i.e. Plex, couchpotato, transmission, etc) and continue to get [EFAULT] Exception: URLError, couchpotato destroyed.......yada yada. I have a few guides that I was using and have been following them to a T and still get the same error. From CLI I've reset to defaults, rebooted, used legacy UI to follow along with the guides (the guides I'm using use legacy UI), but it seems there...

Help - FreeNAS HDD issues

Hello:

First thanks for taking the time to read and possibly help. Here's my situation

Have a Dell Poweredge T130. I installed 4 - 6 TB HGST HDDs in it. BIOS shows all drives as functioning and no issues/errors
Was able to do an install of FreeNAS from USB. Due to the issue, I did another clean install via IDRAC from the ISO mount feature.
The Boot drive is a 32 GB USB stick.

The problem:
When I go to set up my storage array, only 3 of the 4 - 6 TB HDD's is showing. I checked to...

Can't connect to samba from android (kodi and total commander)

Hello,

I think I need some help here. I don't use this two programs that much but just found that at some point they stopped working. I'm on 11.1 but can't tell when they begun to fail.

No network problems since I checked with tcpdump and smb works on my other computers.

At first kodi didn't generate any log on freenas until I changed option to full logging then I got this:

Code:

Problem getting the LSI 9300-8i to run

Hi there,

I started installing my FreeNAS system a week ago and everything was working fine. Network setup, general configuration.

Today came my LSI / Broadcom HBA LSI SAS 9300-8i. I put the card in and the first problem is that FreeNAS is not booting any more. I can access the NAS via IPMI and after "booting" I see a black screen with a _. In addition, I can't get into the Bios any more. (delet does not work neither does F11 for boot options) I can press them as much as I want and still...

HDDs making pattern noise when running plex.

Hi,

SO FreeNAS is running, SMART tests are also fine. I get however a very loud noise every few seconds when running the Plex server. When stopping it, the noise goes back. It's not gone but is only happening every few minutes or from time to time.

I made a video showing (well recording sound) of the noise. It happens every few seconds. FreeNas Noise Video

Here is a screenshot of the disks, network, and shell from that time. At...

Moving from Native FreeNAS to Virtualised(ESXi)

I have been using freenas for over a year now and it has been great but the one downside I am seeing is that I need to use a tonne of VMs for my lab and it is just too time consuming to create these in Bhyve as I usually have to install the stock OS and then install all the applications required.

In some cases the OS are not compatible with Bhyve so I have to install as a VM on my laptop which is something that from listening to the laptops fan may cause the laptop to fly away.

I am...
