Finally building a FreeNAS box

I'm been planning on building a FreeNAS box for almost 10 years. I bought a Norco RPC-3216 3U rackmount server case to start the project back in November 2009. It's been sitting collecting dust (a lot!) as well as a triple redundant power supply I shoved in it way back then. It's got an old Asus mobo (P5K?) in it and some drives that I haven't pulled out yet. I probably fired it up and played with it at one time (It's been 10 years!) but...

Supermicro Motherboard Stuck on "System Initializing" with Code F1

I recently installed three new hard drives in my FreeNAS box - 2 x 8TB and a 40GB SSD drive for the OS. After I got FreeNAS installed and confirmed that my new drives were being detected, I tidied up the cables in the case and put things back together.

Now, my system won't boot. It's stuck at "System Initializing" with code F1 in the lower right. I haven't been able to find much information on what this code means or how to get past it.

I am able to access the system over IMPI, and can...

Do the devs actually update the plugins?

Ever since iX introduced the Nextcloud iocage plugin, it's been half-baked. It leaves Nextcloud in a half-installed state, requiring the user to log in to the Nextcloud instance, enter some information that's far from intuitive (and there's no good way to retrieve it once the user has closed the "installation succeeded" window), and then the user will have a complete installation.

Resolving this so that installing the plugin results in an immediately-usable Nextcloud installation is...

Hallo,

Hier mal meine aktuellen Einstellungen.

FreeNAS Build with 10GBe and Ryzen

Hi,

I'm have been happily running an internal hardware RAID5 (LSI 9260-8i) for almost 10 years with no data loss. First it was 4x 2TB, then 5x, 6x, 7x, 8x (online expansion is awesome!). Later I've upgraded to 5x 4TB, then 6x, 7x and finally (now) 8x 4TB (again using online expansion). I am aware of the risks involved with RAID5 on such large arrays and I have an (often outdated, but still...) offline backup to cater for this risk...
This is all inside my main desktop computer, which I turn...

Can't Replace a Drive in a Pool, Error - [eservicestartfailure]

I'm attempting to replace a questionable drive in a pool and am having trouble. From Pool Status if I select the questionable drive and attempt to Replace it and get an error message - [eservicestartfailure] and it won't let me replace the drive. I get the same failure message if I take the drive Offline first and then try to add the new drive. I ended up reattaching the original questionable drive and the pool is Healthy....... for now.

I just when through this process a few days ago on...

Most silent 12TB HDD (helium filled)

Hi,

So far I wasn't able to find anywhere on the internet a decent noise comparison between 12TB (or larger) HDDs. I already know that helium filled HDDs are quite silent @ idle (and that is also the only specification that that most brands officially list), but I'd like to know which HDDs are the most silent @ load or which have the least annoying sounds with random access.
As far as I understand, it is a bit of a choice that needs to be made in the firmware between more aggressive and...

Hi All,

I am running FreeNAS-11.2-U5(Build Date: Jun 24, 2019 18:41) on a VMware cluster running Intel Xeon processors.

All volumes are gone after manually trying to ad one additiona disk

Yeah i messed up. Since i'm not a frequent user you tend to forget how to manage the system.

I have 4*4tb disk in raid mode. After trying to ad one more 4tb disk manually. I think i selected the new disk and chosed to ad it to my current volume "NAS". No no volumes are showing and i'm hoping that all my data is recoverable somehow.

Can anyone please advice me?

So I had setup a home server, thought I was doing everything right.. put the freenas on a kingston flash drive.. fastforward about 3 years and 4TB worth of pictures and videos later.. the boot drive failed.

So after some digging around online, it seemed like the best option was to reinstall freenas and set it up again.

So thats what I did. I now have a fresh new version of freenas, and I haven't configured anything yet, but I need serious help. In my storage I see my main storage drives...

Checking for TLER, ERC, etc. support on a drive

One of the problems with consumer-grade hard drives is that most of them will hang in the event that they run into an error, and will internally retry the operation, possibly for a minute or more. For a desktop PC, where redundancy does not exist, this is the correct course of action, because failure of a sector means loss of the data.

Enterprise class drives typically support the ability to limit the amount of time a drive wastes trying to recover data. Most of these drives are used in...

Zerotier surviving reboots

Hi,

I played with a new FreeNAS setup yesterday and also ran into the issue described already various times in these forums: After a reboot, the joined networks are lost, and the ID of the zerotier client changes.

Why does that happen?
Zerotier stores its runtime data in the directory /var/db/zerotier-one. The changes in this directory are lost after reboot, as /var is mounted as tmpfs:
Code:
tmpfs on /var (tmpfs, local)

The steps needed to...

(11.2-U5) Migrating freenas-boot from a single drive to a mirrored pair

Currently my freenas-boot zpool is on a single SSD drive. I am worried that this SSD drive is a single point of failure. What I would like to do is install 2 new drives and have freenas-boot use those instead. I imagine the process would be to first mirror freenas-boot to one of the new drives, then do the same with the other new drive, and finally remove the old drive from the zpool.

Are there instructions for how to do this on FreeNAS 11.2(-U5)? Similar questions have been asked in the...

Data taking up double the space

I have had my FreeNAS operating for some time now and I am having a big issue with the same data taking up twice the space on a new pool.

Essentially I have a Striped pool containing 2 4TB drives which has my media on it. The portion I have tried to move right now is 3.5TB. I have made a new RAIDZ2 pool with 6 8TB drives. When i copy the content over to it, it doubles in size on the destination array when looking at the web interface datasets view and when doing a du -sh <folder> but when I...

FreeNAS SMB shares and MacOS Catalina - hangs when browsing folders? How to troubleshoot?

I have a machine running FreeNAS 11.2-U5. This is sharing several shares via Samba (SMB).

I recently upgraded one of my Macs to MacOS Catalina.

Now, when I browse to one of the FreeNAS shares on that machine, the MacOS Finder appears to hang when viewing SMB shares on FreeNAS.

I tried Googling, and can’t see any reported issues like this around Catalina and SMB.

So I thought maybe it was something specific to FreeNAS’s version of Samba, or our default configuration etc.

Has anybody...
