freenas Intel i5-3570k or Xeon E3-1240 V2 ?

I am building a new freenas 11.2 using older mobo ASUS P8Z77-V PRO and spare LSI SAS card

For CPU .. I have a choice to use either Intel i5-3570k or Xeon E3-1240 V2
I don't plan on using this freenas for anything other than disk (ex. no vms)

Both CPUs have 4 cores but the Xeon has 8 threads (4 on the i5)
benchmarks show mixed bag

So not sure which would be better use here ? or if either would work same ?

Good morning

I have the following server:

MB: Supermicro X9SRL-F
CPU: E5-2650 v2 (8C/16T)
RAM: 64GB 1600MHz DDR3
HBAs: 2x LSI 9211-8i flashed to IT-mode
Drives: 10x10TB WD Red (white label, shucked from WD External drives) in one ZFS2 pool
NIC: Intel X540-T2 2x10Gb RJ45

Other relevant HW:
Networking:
Switch: Netgear SX10

Desktop specs:
CPU: 9600K
RAM: 16GB 3200MHz
SSD: Intel 660p 1TB
NIC: Asus XC-C100C 1x10Gb RJ45

Performance is decent. Crystal Disk Mark reports the following:

replication - dataset can't be selected even w recursive snaps on pool

Im setting up (testing) replication between 2x FN boxes (FreeNAS-11.2-U7 on both, using legacy gui), and i see on the "Add Replication -> Volume/Dataset drop-down menu" i only have the options to choose Datasets where i have explicitly setup a periodic snapshot task for that specific dataset.

My question is:
I have recursive snapshots setup on "pool A" (so all of its child datasets are having snaps taken), so why can't a choose "dataset A-1" (which is a child dataset of pool A)...

Is there anything like a netdata equivalent for FreeNAS?

I was recently playing around with netdata on my xcp-ng hardware (Xen hypervisor). I really liked the lived reports it would generate.
Does FreeNas have anything equivalent? The reporting tab in the gui is nice, but really isn't at the same level or detail as compared to netdata.

****Well hot dang. I answered by own question. Netdata built into freenas. Awesome.

Volume name recovery?

My boot stick died, and I panicked, I have created another boot stick, but can only import 2 of my 5 drives (still UFS), auto import causes a system reboot, and I cannot remember the name that I gave the volumes to do a manual import. is there any way that I can get the system to import them without the names, or to get the names from the drives themselves?

Freenas as a hyprovisor

Okay, so I don't want to visualize freenas. I know some say it can be done but I just don't want the risks with this data. I know , I know it can be done they say but I'd just rather not.

But I'm in a weird situation where I have a need (well someone I work with has the need) for storage and freenas is the perfect fit but they also have a need for a few other servers, think a linux box or 2 and a Windows server.

Is it safe to virtualize ON freenas? In a production environment. To clarify...

Slow without GPU

Dear,

Recently I made a NAS, when reading the forums I came to the conclusion I do not need a GPU within my NAS.

Motherboard: AsRock B365M
RAM: Corsair Vengeance DDR4 2400MHZ
CPU: Intel Core I3-9100F
Disks: 1 SSD, 2 HDD (Currently)

When I do not have a GPU install the transfer speed for uploading and downloading are arround 2/5 MB/s
But the moment I install a GPU I get the full speed I can reach with my current network configuration.

I tried a GTX 650 TI...

Hi everyone, I had a power outage and my freenas turned off when I turned it on again, I got that message and I could not go through the help web.

I had FreeNAS working well with some other hardware but recently changed hardware. I fired up the machine and everything moved and worked okay. Okay, until I imported my pool then Samba will not start. Does anyone have any ideas?

I am very in experienced with most of this.

I'm attempting to replace a drive with a larger one via the GUI. I am currently in the process of simultaneously replacing 3 other drives in the same zvol. This is the final drive in the zvol, and I cannot begin the replace process on this drive.

All drives previously present in my machine are working, the goal is only to replace the drives with larger capacity drives.

/var/log/messages.log and /var/log/middlewared.log display nothing relevant besides perhaps "Got an orphan smartd...

Have in last few months (after some thorough investigation into ZFS and FreeNAS) been building and testing my first FreeNAS-unit.
The unit works, but is not 'running'... the speeds for transferring files and listing folders are way too slow.
So please let me have your raw remarks on the hardware chosen and settings done etc. don't spare me to be polite... the essence is to get this thing working so I can get ahead with using the NAS.

I have 'newbie' status (wearing that status with pride...

I already did all the steps, such as pools and sharing path,

OK... so, I MUST be missing something as I've done this successfully before but for some reason, I can not get OpenVPN to successfully put me behind a VPN...

I upgraded from FreeNAS 11.2 to 11.3 this morning and have been trying to migrate my transmission/vpn build back to my FreeNAS (They are currently hosted on an external raspberry pi)...

Anyway, I've run through all of the write ups on how to do this (and have actually successfully done it several times in the past)... is there...

Hi all,

I have a problem, I have an installation of FreeNAS-11.2-U5 connected by ISCSI to an ESXI VWARE server, but the problem is that an extent was mistakenly deleted, and now I can no longer see the datastore in vmware, there is some way to recover data.

FreeNAS 11.2 box: https://pcpartpicker.com/list/bVysXv

Crude network description: router -> poe switch -> wireless ap -> switch -> FreeNAS box

I'm running the plexpass iocage plugin and having a lot of buffering problems. Any stream over 4 Mbps (according to Plex) buffers forever or only plays for a moment before buffering again. Most of my content shows as 5.4 Mbps without transcoding and has the problem at that quality.

I have problems with both wired and wireless clients...

hi guys,

so i build my own NAS 2 weeks ago and installed freenas.
I only want to do 3 things with this server.

Setup SAMBA to store all my movies.
Setup Sonarr/sabnzbd so it downloads my movies and shows and stores it in the SAMBA share.
Access my files outside of my local network.

I was able to setup samba. i moved lot of my movies in it. I was able to access it in windows pc (mapped the drive). I was able to get kodi to connect to it and pull the movies.

I've setup a test FN and ESXi setup, on 2x extra boxes i have to test/experiment with using FN vmware aware snapshots.

FN= FreeNAS-11.2-U7
esxi= 6.5u3

Expected result- I should be able to clone a snapshot, then add that clone/datastore as a NFS share, connect it to esxi, (register the .vmx) and revert to the snapshot of the that was taken by freenas of the running VM.

Problem: on esxi, revert to snapshot shows as "completed successfully" but the VM does not reflect that at all (the...

VMware (coordinated) snapshot not working properly

Hi all, I am using FreeNAS to serve iSCSI storage to my ESXi host, and configured the VMware-snapshot(BTW I feel it needs a better name so it won't get confused with the VM snapshot) in GUI. It appears working fine that it instructed vSphere to snapshot the VMs before a ZFS snapshot was made. However, when I clone and re-mount a previous snapshot, it appears that the VM was snapshotted w/o any state preservation

Cannot boot Windows Server in FreeNAS 11

So I finally managed to remove Corral from my system and installed a fresh copy of FreeNAS 11 (Stable).

I was able to create an Ubuntu server VM within the GUI, however I cannot get a Windows VM to boot from the CD. I've tried various OS versions (Server 2008, 2012, 2016) and they either don't boot at all, crash after the Windows logo appears (and disconnects me) or simply gets stuck on the blue Windows icon (Server 2016 Essentials).

I'm running a HP N54L.

What can I do to diagnose the...
