Hey gents... so, a weird issue. I "upgraded" from 11.2 to 11.3 today and when I go to my PLUGINS (Available) tab, it kicks back with the following error:

Code:

PID fan controller Perl script

I can't post in Useful Scripts, so Hardware will have to do.

I've updated @Stux's hybrid fan controller script to replace his HD fan control logic (which uses three discrete fan duty cycles as a function of warmest HD temperature) with a PID control loop, which controls duty cycle in 1% increments as a function of the average HD temperature. I left the CPU fan...

Cannot change permissions on SMB share linux client

I tried reading Methods for Fine Tuning Samba Permissions...but quite frankly, I don't understand any of it and certainly can't figure out whether/how any of it pertains to my situation. It seems to assume way too much prior knowledge.

I have a samba share, it works beautifully on windows, but when I try to access it on linux, it shows all files as 700 (rwx------) permission, owned by me, and my group.

That's great for many operations but I have an app that fails unless the permission is...

WD Red 8TB: Mixing Air and Helium Drives?

Is there any harm in mixing air/helium drives that are otherwise identical? I have 12x8TB Reds with the same model number, but half of them are air filled and the other half helium.

If I do mix them, and use two 6x8TB vdevs, should I put all of the air filled drives in one vdev or mix and match evenly?

FreeNAS won't boot after CPU upgrade

Hi Everyone!

I sure hope you can help with this one...

For the record, I've been using FreeNAS for over 3 years (since 9.x, I'm currently on 11.2-U5(?)) and I haven't tried doing much other than basic NAS functionality. So, I would consider myself to be both a Unix and FreeNAS n00b, though I have both used and worked in the computer industry since the late 1980s (first computer was a TRS-80 with 4K(!) of RAM and a cassette tape drive storage).

It has worked very well through an upgrade...

I'm curious. I have installed FreeNAS directly on a HPe DL380 Gen10 server. I intend to use VMs in FreeNAS to drive PFSense, Unifi Protect (ubituiti products), and Unifi Controller. THe install of FreeNAS seemed to go fine. I was able to make a pool and all good. Pools reports "Healthy"

However, I hear repeated scans of the drives, and continual errors in the console.

Hey everyone,

As the title says, I just moved across the country. Finally getting my lab and computer stuff up and running, but tonight when I tried to get my FreeNAS box going, I got a bunch of error text and then when I booted in to the GUI, my volume is showing status UNKNOWN. Did a zpool import and this is what I got back:

Code:
root@guiltySpark ~]# zpool import

So I want to move my jails from my main volume (Vol1) to a mirrored pair of 240GB SSDs (Jails). I know some other people on here have done it but I am unable to find the threads on how to do it. So what do I need to do to move the data safely?

I know there has been some digital ink spilled on this topic generally, but I had some specific questions that I was hoping someone could help with. This is my first HBA as I've grown my server over time. I've looked into it and believe I have old firmware and want to upgrade it. Below are the specifics to the HBA. As you can see its on version 14 of the firmware:

Code:
root@freenas:~ # mpsutil show adapter

Moving system to new enclosure

Hi, I was hoping I could ask some advice regarding my home FreeNAS 11.2 system.

I have too much stuff (drives, expansion cards) packed into way too small of a case and I just need to give my little system that grows and grows a new home.

Is there anything particular I should be careful of? The same motherboard and all is just moving to a new case, but in the event I attach an SATA cable to a different port, am I going to have problems?

Hi.

Unfortunately, i lost a disk to a lot of bad sectors and it needed to be replaced. I bought a new one, and replaced the disk, and started the process within freenas, and the resilvering process.

Really unfortunately, i lost a second disk again to bad sectors while the resilvering process was running, and the process would restart. I realised defeat and checked if i just have access to the data, and some was there so i just wanted to get as much as possible out and restart the volume...

Sinnvolle Backupstrategie

Hallo,

DL380e - better install freeNAS on baremetal or put ESXi in-between.

I want to build a rack box that will serve as backup platform only. I chose a DL380e platform as it comes w/ 14 x 3,5 bays, is cheap and still pretty modern. I will use flashed H310 adapter. I would like to achieve three goals: reliability, ease of management and easy of recovery in case of failure.
Which of the two would better suite my needs:
- direct bare metal Freenas installation
- Freenas over ESXi installation

After a few weeks of testing, it's ready to go with some real data.... :)

It will act as a main file repository, game storage, and media storage/server [via the official Plex plug-in], replacing a bunch of DAS units I previously used.
A secondary (smaller) FreeNAS that's almost finished will be looking after backups [of the main server, TimeMachine for Macs, backups for Windows PCs, etc..]

[The 10Gb NICs, DAC cables and switch arrived this week, so with single large files [e.g. a Windows...

I want to use it as both a storage and Plex media server and that's probably about it, I mainly need advice about the hardware specs which i have listed below.
