I am trying to stand up a second nic to my network so I can create a lagg. However if i try to add either a second static interface or if i try to create the lagg i get this:

puzzling networking behavior

I read the documentation where it says you cnanot have more than one interface per subnet. However, if i set physical interface 0 to 192.168.255.5/24 I can then set interface 1 to dhcp and it gets an ipaddress on the same subnet. So if that's the case why am i not able to set two interfaces on the same subnet statically if it will do wt with one of them static and one dhcp?

Hello everybody,
I had a problem with one of my jails and installed a second jail nearly with the same name.
After I have solved the problem with my first jail I deleted the wrong one :'-(.
I hope we can use an undo for that?

I am using freenas 11.3 U2. The jails were both nextcloud Plugin-Jails with version 11.3-RELEASE-p7.
The missing jail is named nextcloud.

My storage looks as seen in the screenshot, snapshots can also be seen on the second screenshot.

Is there any chance to get my...

I'm trying to remove a pool so I can remake a new pool with the drives. But every time I run the export/disconnect command I get the following error:

Apr 18 10:34:02 freenas uwsgi: [middleware.exceptions:36] [MiddlewareError: Failed to remove mountpoint /mnt/Backup: [Errno 16] Device busy: '/mnt/Backup']

I'm running version FreeNAS-11.2-U8

Help with datasets and subfolders

Hi everyone,

I finally upgraded to 11.3-U2.
I created a new dataset in the shell under a dataset folder. My problem is it doesn't show up under the web gui, but is visible in shell and winscp. I have tried mirroring the privileges to a dataset created from the gui that shows up just fine in the gui to no avail.

I have tried searching the forums as well as search engines, but no luck.

Thanks in advance and any advice is greatly appreciated.

Best,

jmnick

disk removed / detached. Next Steps?

Hi Guys,

I need some advice on how to deal with a "removed disk".

Short story: FreeNAS reports disk "removed by administrator" and a degraded pool (with sufficient replicas). Recent SMART test of this disk gave no indication of an upcoming problem. Another failure would destroy my pool, I have therefore shut down my FreeNAS. I can survive without it some time.

What should I do next?

1. Should I and if so how can I test the disk independent from FreeNAS?

RAM requirements for TrueNAS lowered in recent documentation?

I know a year or two ago , the 'one GB per TB of storage space' was a defacto standard paradigm...

Now I see TrueNAS' official page says just (paraphrasing) '8 GB for managing up to 8 hard drives'?

That's a pretty huge difference, as 8 each 16 TB drives could be done with 8 GB now, vice the old recommended standard of 128 GB?

What/when are performance impacts for minimal RAM vs following the old standards when simply managing the storage? (Not talking about someone wanting to run 5 VMs...

Boot disk usage

Hey i'm new to freenas, after watching vids and reading stuff online, i did my first install and it went great. Here's the problem i ran into though. I used 2 120GB SSD's as boot drives and i was under the assumption that i would be able to use those SSD's for installs of plug ins or maybe even a small boot disk for a vm. Now when trying to install a plugin all i see is the data storage pool i made, not the 2 boot disk mirror.

Am i overlooking a function that needs to be turned on or is it...

Dynamic DNS not working

Hi,

I recently upgraded from version 9.something to 11.8u2. Since then, my no-IP dynamic dns isn't updating. I've tried re-configuring it in both the new and classic GUIs, and the configuration file looks right in /usr/local/etc:

Code:
period = 600
provider default@no-IP.com {
    ssl = false
    username = myusername
    password = 'mypassword'
    hostname = { "myhostname.ddns.net" }
}

If I check /var/log/messages, all I see is the service starting and stopping - there's nothing...

Terrible RAID0 Performance

Hi All,

I've got myself a FreeNAS system, but this post is not relating to that system. It runs well.

I've got a question relating a standard RAID setup using a Perc 5i RAID Controller.

Specs:

Intel i7 2700k
16GB 1600Mhz RAM
OS Drive - Crucial MX500 500GB SSD
RAID Physical Drives - 4 x WD Black (2010) drives with about 2-3yrs of usage previously in a RAID5
RAID Controller - Dell Perc 5i RAID Controller w/ 128MB RAM Cache (battery is dead)

Configuration is in a screenshot attached but...

Losing mouse control after few seconds in bhyve Ubuntu VM VNC

Hi, newish to FreeNAS but loving it so far, just got my first VM up and running on my box which is FreeNAS 11.3 u2. Installed Ubuntu 18.04.4 and it all seems to work great, but after a few seconds to one minute or so, I lose the ability to control my mouse through the built-in VNC (which I think is bhyve?) - I can still control the keyboard and therefore log in with my user/pw which works. Can't do much beyond that as I don't know how to access cmd line, nor can I control mouse. I can...

Hard drives that write data in overlapping, "shingled" tracks, have greater areal density than ones that do not. For cost and capacity reasons, manufacturers are increasingly moving to SMR, Shingled Magnetic Recording. SMR is a form of PMR (Perpendicular Magnetic Recording). The tracks are perpendicular, they are also shingled - layered - on top of each other. This table will use CMR (Conventional Magnetic Recording) to mean "PMR without the use of shingling".

NFS Share does not show any sub-folders

I admit I am new to Linux, so something probably very simple need to be done.

I want to share whole pool which has about 10 datasets in it.

I created share, listed pool as item to share.
I did mark it as Read-Only. All setups shown in pictures.

My intent is simple. I just want another Linux client to have RO access to be able to backup files from FreeNAS

What I see is my share. I see all datasets inside of it (so it does connect!)
But I don't see any files inside of datasets. Must be...

I’ve gone though all the steps for setting up a FreeNAS on my old desktop from this YouTube video. I’m really new to this and wanted some help. So I got everything setup including my user and pool and windows sharing. Yet for some reason whenever I try to upload something to the network folder or even create a new folder I get a “Make sure you are connected to the network and try again error”. Now I am on the same network as the nas, and I also am sure that my user has permissions to write...

Hi everyone
I recently purchased this system and now that all the parts have arrived I'm setting it up. (I've reproduced the parts list at the bottom of the post for convenience).
So I unpack the the CPU, and Mobo, seat the CPU, install the fan, attach the PSU, connect chassis front-panel power connector, and finally hit the button.

Nothing.

Long story short. 3 years ago I migratedfrom the UK to NZ and spent 3 months backpacking on route... (awsum)

Before I left I spent weeks pulling files out of old hardrive, nas drives and even zips! I put them on a SSD I installed in a rather battered laptop. I also decided to sync to Google drive... - unfortunately laptop got stollen on day one of travels, not completed its sync.

Recommended topology for a "fusion" pool?

$

Hi all,

I now have this test machine with 4x SATA HDDs and 2x SATA SSDs. My current production setup (same number of drives) uses a RAIDZ2 for "storage" and a mirror for my VMs.

I want to toy with this test system setting special_small_blocks to 16k for my VM ZVOLs and see how that works out. Would you recommend keeping the RAIDZ2 for the HDDs and adding the mirrored SSDs as the special allocation vdev, or should I setup everything as mirrored pairs? And either way - why? ;)...
