Configure rsync backups in BackupPC (jail)

I have followed and got BackupPC running in a jail using the current (Blanchet) FreeNAS BackupPC guide. The guide installs with "smb" backup as it's default Xfer function. I need to use rsync.
The guide installation creates a "backuppc" user that has a shell of "/usr/sbin/nologin" and a "/nonexistant" home directory. In order for rsync to function both of these are needed.
I tried creating a "backuppc" user with "adduser" and then followed the guide to install BacklupPC. BackupPC...

Before I left I spent weeks pulling files out of old hardrive, nas drives and even zips! I put them on a SSD I installed in a rather battered laptop. I also decided to sync to Google drive... - unfortunately laptop got stollen on day one of travels, not completed its sync.

I have about 500gb of files stored on Google drive. It's annoying not being able to play personal video of...

Plex has IP address but not accessible locally

Sooo after having my router fail and resetting up my network I was having trouble getting freenas to take an IP. On the server-side I deleted my network Bond and reset the interfaces and they both got IP addresses. But once I went into the GUI to start Plex it wouldn't receive and IP and gave this error.
"DHCP - FAILED PARSING: list index out of range"

So then, of course, I started poking around settings in the Jail and ended up getting the Plex server to grab an IP from the router separate...

FreeNAS Build with 10GBe and Ryzen

Hi,

I have been happily running an internal hardware RAID5 (LSI 9260-8i) for almost 10 years with no data loss. First it was 4x 2TB, then 5x, 6x, 7x, 8x (online expansion is awesome!). Later I've upgraded to 5x 4TB, then 6x, 7x and finally (now) 8x 4TB (again using online expansion). I am aware of the risks involved with RAID5 on such large arrays and I have an (often outdated, but still...) offline backup to cater for this risk...
This is all inside my main desktop computer, which I turn...

Hard drives that write data in overlapping, "shingled" tracks, have greater areal density than ones that do not. For cost and capacity reasons, manufacturers are increasingly moving to SMR, Shingled Magnetic Recording. SMR is a form of PMR (Perpendicular Magnetic Recording). The tracks are perpendicular, they are also shingled - layered - on top of each other. This table will use CMR (Conventional Magnetic Recording) to mean "PMR without the use of shingling".

SMR is well suited for...

Hello,

Yes...I get there are a LOT of suggestions. I actually have a questions regarding an ASUS Z10PR-D16 that I have found to be plentiful on eBay, currently. I have the NR40700 that @Chris Moore has and I need ideas to fill that beast. I want 10-gig, eventually. I want a powerful enough processor to be able to at least get 10K+ score on passmark....the reason I opt'd to look at this ASUS is that it can carry two...which makes hitting that number a lot...

Hi!

My freenas turns 4 years soon and the hardware running it is almost 8 years old!
So i thought it´s time to uppgrade the hardware, another kick to change was also that it has started with the famouse "unscheled restarts" issues.

I´m planning to run it on on.

Nextcloud plugin error after changes to system

Hello,

I'm just going to start off by saying I'm not real knowledgeable with FreeNAS or NAS stuff in general, I've kind of just been stumbling my way through things for the past year, going through the documentation, and finding info where I can on the internet. So far it's gotten me through most things, but now I have hit a wall that I can't quite figure out how to pass.

For my system I'm using a somewhat dated laptop with an i7-4700MQ CPU and 8GB of RAM running on FreeNAS-11.3-U1. It all...

Lost Pools and Shares after reboot.

Hi, I'm relatively new to FreeNAS and Linux in general. I have an old desktop computer that is definitely short on system requirements, but FreeNAS was working fine before a reboot. My Acer Aspire X1200 won't boot if external USB drives are connected. So, I have to disconnect the drives, boot up, then connect them. There are 2 issues with this, besides the obvious won't boot if connected.

First, if the drives are connected to a hub and connected all together, they don't get the same...

Hello !
I've been looking for a way to somehow "forward" a USB dongle plugged in my FreeNAS Box to a VM created from the WebUI.
Having read lots of posts here and there, I was starting to think it would be impossible. (for various reasons, software not available on FreeBSD, mandtory kernel recompiling, overpriced solutions...)

But I found a working solution, that you can test easily for free, and that is not so expensive. It is the VirtualHere project...

Weird smarctl bug on FreeNAS 11.3 causing disk errors

Ticket: NAS-105721
UPDATE: This happens every time I run smartctl, like:
Code:
smartctl -a /dev/da6

It affects 11.3 only, no issues on 11.2 or older.

After a recent upgrade from 11.2-U8 to 11.3-U2 we have noticed a rapid and constant growth of "non-media errors" in all 12 connected disks simultaneously. I tried to replicate the issue on the test server and with the same hardware but fresh installation (no pools) new...

Reverse Proxy using Caddy (with optional automatic TLS)

I've thought for a while that it would be nice to set up a reverse proxy in a jail to give easier access to many of the other apps I have installed in jails, without having to remember their port numbers. And it would be nice for the sake of security if it did TLS termination as well. Fortunately, Caddy is designed to do exactly this with a minimum of configuration.

See the...

FreeNAS 11 - bhyve VM USB passthrough

I understand that currently there is no official support of USB passthrough to VM. However, reading this thread (https://forums.freenas.org/index.php?threads/vm-usb-passthrough.47134/), I see that it is possible to passthrough USB, but this requires disabling xhci therefore preventing booting from USB.

However, since I boot from an SD drive, so does this mean I can disable xhci and enable USB passthrough without any adverse effect? Is there any expected timeframe for official...

ARP expiration (maybe) causing loss of connectivity?

Hi everyone.

Been lurking around the forums for years now, but now it's time to actually post something as well. (First post ever, yay!! :)

I have recently replaced our switches for a couple of new ones, with extra 10G ports I could attach our FreeNAS system to. Since the new switches has been introduced in our network, we have seen a lot of dropouts in connecticity. We're using the FreeNAS box as an iSCSI target with a couple of ESXi servers as initiators. This has been working flawlessly...

Spontaneous reboots - but always at the same time

$

So, I understand that spontaneous reboots are often a problem with hardware. But here's my situation. Three times in the last 4 or 5 months, my home FreeNAS box has rebooted itself precisely at midnight Saturday night / Sunday AM. Spontaneous? Yep. Random? 3x at the exact same time says no.

So, a few things happen at that time:
1) The cron jobs for pool scrubs happen then. But it doesn't correlate with a scrub actually starting necessarily.
2) I have backup jobs for various systems in...
