Open Letter to the TrueOS Community - TrueOS Discontinuation

Hey TrueOS Community! I just wanted to take a few minutes to address what some of you may have already guessed. With a heavy heart, the TrueOS Project’s core team has decided to discontinue the development of TrueOS for the foreseeable future. We’ll still be heavily involved in other Open Source projects like FreeNAS & TrueNAS CORE. We’re incredibly proud of the work we put into TrueOS and its predecessor, PC-BSD.

TrueOS source code will remain available on GitHub for others that may want...

Safety concerns

I am a network noob geek. I'm having my first Cisco CCNA V7 course this Saturday. I know the basics of a network, but I need to learn so much more.

My LAN is working behind a Bitdefender BOX 2 gateway/firewall.

I am installing FreeNAS on a pc inside the network for SMB data backup/ multimedia share inside the network. On the FreeNAS I'm planning to run a VM Ubuntu server with Pi-Hole on it for blocking the adds. All good here...hopefully!

First question:
I also need to run a Blynk server...

Dell PowerEdge T710 for home server

I am planning my first FreeNAS home server and found an upgraded Dell PowerEdge T710 for US$550.00 that looks interesting. The server needs to run Plex, Nextcloud, Logitech Media Server (if a version exists that will run on FreeNAS) and it will be used as a file server in an mixed MacOS/Windows 10/Linux/IoT network. In the future I may add a security camera server that monitors a mix of 7 - 8 2.1MP and 4.2MP cameras. I have Netgear switches that support link aggregation.

The server I am...

I am running an almost-fresh install of TrueNAS-12.0-BETA

I tried the replication task for the first time to move a dataset from one pool to another.

Everything worked as expected until the very end.

For some reason the target dataset is encrypted...

I tried the key from the old pool but that didn't work.

Anyone know how to unlock the dataset?

Or to use the Replication feature without having...

Network Interfaces UP and DOWN Rapidly, 24/7

Please see excerpt from my console log. This is happening 24/7. The network still appears to be functioning, fine, but I can't imagine that the adapters are supposed to bounce like that. I have two dual Gb Intel server NICs, one set up as an LACP LAGG connected to a Gig Cisco Switch with LACP configured.

I'm also running two or three jails. Could this have something do do with it? I've been fighting it for awhile now, and I'm about to just remove all of the NICs and start over with a...

Windows 10 VM Blue Screen MULTIPROCESSOR_CONFIGURATION_NOT_SUPPORTED

Recently I tried to create a windows 10 vm on FreeNAS-11.3-U3.2. After booting to the virtual cd drive I get a blue screen error saying "MULTIPROCESSOR_CONFIGURATION_NOT_SUPPORTED". I have 2 ubuntu vms working perfectly fine. I have even tried to turn them off to see if that would resolve the problem with no luck. My CPU is a AMD FX(tm)-4100 Quad-Core Processor with 24GB of ram. I also have 2 3tb drives with an ssd for caching. If you need any additional information please let me know...

Importance of Snapshots and hard drive image backups (TROJAN nailed my network!)

2 days ago my 9 yr. old son unknowingly clicked on a popup from either one of those .io games or through Roblox somehow. I don't know exactly where it came from, but he clicked it and WHAM... all files on my computer, networked computers and my shared FreeNAS folders got locked/encrypted (*.locked extension) with the txt file that I took a snapshot of (attached). Luckily I almost immediately noticed because the movie I was watching on EMBY stopped playing - because those files got nailed...

Tautulli been running fine but now can't start

Hello,

This seems really odd and I can't figure out what to do. I have several iocage jails running fine and then after a router reboot, Tautulli would not let me access the webui. I found that the jail couldn't start. I deleted the jail and tried to create it again but it kept having the same issue, I went down the path of upgrading from 11.2 to 11.3 U3.2 and also upgraded all my jails (thankfully most went smooth with the exception of transmission which took some time to fix). I was...

HOME USER: advice needed. How to distribute a bunch of HDDs?

Ok!

So I reached a point where I have a bunch of HDDs and I'm wondering what would be the best way to arrange them, both physically (where/which size) and logically (zfs-1,2,3, mirror vdevs etc).

That's my situation:

So, my challenge is: how to distribute this bunch of HDDs among my systems, so that I maximize space with good redundancy/security, and keeping at least 2 backups.

The MAIN SYSTEM has 10 slots, the BACKUP 1 has 6 and the...

Hi,

bin neu hier und versuche meine alte NAS Struktur in NAS und Backup-NAS auf zu brechen.

Nun soll aus meinem ITX mit freenas das Backup NAS werden:

  • 16 Gb Kingston
  • OS noch auf 32 Gb USB Stick mit UEFI und USB3
  • 1x 128 Samsung, 1x160Gb 2,5 HDD
  • 1x Areca PCIex1 RAID Controller -> 8x4TB WD red im RAID 5

PSA: Fix pkg after upgrading an iocage jail to 12.1

After upgrading a jail using iocage upgrade -r 12.1-RELEASE jailname on TrueNAS Core 12.0 Beta 1, pkg inside the jail will fail, thusly:

Code:
root@traefik:~ # pkg info
ld-elf.so.1: Shared object "libarchive.so.6" not found, required by "pkg"

Fix this by running pkg-static install -f pkg inside the jail, which removes the reference to the removed libarchive.so.6.

Which in turn allows you to run pkg upgrade -y to complete...

CPU choice; hyperthreading or not? (first build)

To cut down some advice (ECC etc), my choice of CPU for my first build is limited by the motherboard so ECC is not an option.
My choices are basically between Intel Core i5 or i7 of the 6th or 7th generation (Z270 chipset/Socket 1151).
I will not do any virtualization, but I will do iSCSI (datastore for a ESXi server).
So my limit is 4 cores and I assume I should get the fastest I can, but other han that?
Will FreeNAS benefit enough from hyperthreading (adding 4 threads to the mix) to...

SMART test tasks updated to 11.3 - possible bug

$

I can't really report this as a bug as my information is too vague. For several generations of FreeNAS I have had SMART test tasks on ada0-3 and not ada4-5. That is because the latter are SSDs and on crippled SATA connections on an N54L and they cause errors when I try to do SMART tests. I last checked on these tasks in the old GUI probably in 11.2 but possibly before. I have been on 11.3 since the release, now on 11.3-U3.2. I now find that the smart test tasks in the new GUI *include*...

I updated the Plex pkg and noticed this note:
Code:
@@@ INTEL GPU OFFLOAD NOTES @@@

If you have a supported Intel GPU, you can leverage hardware
accellerated encoding/decoding in Plex Media Server on FreeBSD 12.0+.

The requirements are as follows:

* Install multimedia/drm-kmod: e.g., pkg install drm-fbsd12.0-kmod

* Enable loading of kernel module on boot: sysrc kld_list+="drm"
** If Plex will run in a jail, you must load the module outside the jail!

* Load the kernel module now: kldload...

Hi All

I am running:
FreeNAS-11.2-U4.1
E3-1230 V2 (4 core 8 thread)
2 x 8GB DDR3 ECC RAM
PCIe SSD for VM zvol

VM:
Win 10
2vCPU
4GB RAM

Fresh install of Win 10 (latest build, ISO created with Windows media creation tool)
Saw that there were issues with e1000 LAN adapter, so switched to VirtIO, installed the virtio-win-0.1.171-1 driver for the NIC and it is now not pinned at 100% at all times, but any basic task will spike CPU to 100%, through VNC or RDP.

As Bhyve allocates sockets, I cant...

I was looking around for the installation how to for Guac on FreeNAS jail but was unable to find one so I decided to write down the steps I took during the installation and post it here.

from http://guac-dev.org/:
Guacamole is a clientless remote desktop gateway. It supports standard protocols like VNC and RDP.

We call it clientless because no plugins or client software are required.

Thanks to HTML5, once Guacamole is installed on a server, all you need to...
