Decided on the majority of my spec, now I need to make choices about SLOG and L2ARC

I'm putting together a new FreeNAS build. The main hardware issue left is SLOG/L2ARC to get the best chance of good performance/reliability.

Hardware -
  • Xeon E5-1620 v3 (4 core, 3.5 GHz+ as I might heavily use CIFS or other single-thread services)
  • 32GB RDIMM 2400 (Amazon have an insanely good offer on Crucial DDR4 RDIMM kits, go check it out!) - I can always increase to 64GB in future if needed.
  • Baseboard - either a Supermicro X10-something or perhaps a well-built X99...

So, I read guides, and understand I need to pass-through SATA controller.
Please help me identify controller to buy for that purpose.

Hi,

I've attached a picture from the infrastructure what I want to build. I would like suggestions how can create datasets shares etc.
In the FreeNas I want to store my files, movies, music files, downloads. I want to reach these files from a desktop pc with a CIFS share, and some of them from LINUX based Raspberry Pi with NFS share.

My ssh sessions are "dumb terminals" now

I haven't changed any settings and now every time I log into my server ( with root) I get "this is a dumb terminal" so I can't VI files.

It was working correctly this weekend and a few days ago it just stopped. I'm using the newest version of Putty and I've rebooted the machine (I've actually applied an update since then)

What happened and how can I fix it?

zfs rename -f after renaming all data is gone but storage is still used

Hello all, sorry to abruptly enter the community with a question. Until today I followed many speeches and learned alot but I never felt that I could share back something.

Unfortunately, today I did something that was seen normal routine and ended up in a disaster.

I was having problem with Windows permissions on a Dataset. I tried to rename it with zfs rename to move all the data in a new dataset with the same name. That said the device was busy, and I tought it was meaning used by the...

I am still working on setup, but one thing I have noticed.....
I have a cifs share, and I have a pc that has the share open. Not transfer files or anything, just windows explorer open to the share.
After x amount of time (not sure on the exact amount) when I go to click on that share, there is a delay before anythign happens. Almost like the share had disconnected with non-use. I have had this with multiple pc's.

Any thoughts?

My Dream System (I think)

You know, I'm looking for another project to mess around with and I'm thinking of building a server with which I can run ESXi on and then FreeNAS and Sophos and some goofing around VMs on top of that, or maybe when FreeNAS 10 comes out, if Bhyve works really well, Sophos in that as well as other VMs, I don't need ESXi unless it's just that much better. With that in mind I'm liking the X11SSM-F-O, 64GB RAM, Xeon E3-1230 v5 Skylake 3.4GHz and that will only cost just under $1300. OUCH! But...

Can you get S.M.A.R.T info ?

Does anybody know if it's even possible to get a SMART info about a drive behind megaraid controller with esxi installed on it?

P.S. This not about "how to monitor raid card health in esxi" this is about how to pull info from SMART about drive, like: How many TB already written or how many sector were relocated, or how many power-on hours.

Thanks to anybody who can help. If it's not possible at least I'll know to stop looking for a solution.

[How To] Hard Drive Burn-In Testing

jgreco did a nice system build/test/burn-in guide here, but I (and many others) found the details a bit lacking in the hard drive section. He mentions S.M.A.R.T. tests, but doesn't go over how to run them, or how to view the results, etc. and then just kinda throws around dd commands without a lot of explanation there either. Yes, this information is available elsewhere, but for...

vmware-snapshots?

Hi,

Is the storage|vmware-snapshots meant for backing up datastore on the vmware hypervisor to freenas? Or is this something more complicated, like taking proper zfs-snapshots of vdmk's on freenas, used by hypervisor through iscsi ?

Manual is quite brief of the subject:
"VMware-Snapshot allows you to coordinate ZFS snapshots when using VMware as a datastore. Once this type of snapshot is created, FreeNAS® will automatically snapshot any running VMware virtual machines before taking...

How to install Boinc with World Community Grid in a FreeNAS 9.3 Jail

This tutorial shows how to get boinc with the world community grid running in a freenas 9.3 jail. You can manage this boinc-client via boinc-manager from any other computer.

1. Prepare the FreeNAS-Host

1.2. Prepare Kernel-Params (sysctl) via FreeNAS
-Gui
Code:
variable: kern.elf32.fallback_brand
value: 3
type: sysctl

-> for linux compatibility, allows ELF32...

FreeNAS 9.10.1 moving data files

It has taken me weeks and lots of reading to decide between the few good servers out there; FreeNAS, MediaVault, OpenNAS, etc.

I settled now for FreeNAS. During the research, which includes an almost complete read of the 306 page documentation, I've tried as well to find an answer to this question below.

I have installed, far from configured fully, but getting there. And part of this configuration involves the transfer of data.

Data: music, pictures, movies, each that I'd like a folder...

Hey!
So I've been fiddling around and trying to get the USER rooted to the USER dataset and not the branch before.
User in question - ftpuser
ftpuser has primary group 'ftpuser' and auxillary group 'sftp' which is used as reference for the SSH match block.

What happens is that if I set the home directory of the USER to be '/mnt/MirrorVolume/sftp/ftpuser' and if I set the extra options in ssh to:

I get the ERROR when trying to connect to it...

FreeNAS 10 Beta and future updates

Hello Folks,

I'm really considering to move from Synology to FreeNAS as it allow more flexibility on soft and hardware. This is for an home use and a really simple purposes :

- File sharing
- Torrents Download
- Music streaming
- Active directory Authentication

My main concern is: Do I install the 9 release or the 10.0 Beta (I'm really attracted by the 10) ?

So is it already usable for a home lab ? And more important, will it be possible to upgrade to the final release (and Beta2)...

mv errors?

Hey Guys,

I have a bunch of files (600gb worth) that need to be moved between shares and if I do it via windows it transfers the files across the network. I figured the way around this would be to move with the CLI.

So dialed down into my main Dev directory and entered this:
Code:
Primo@Nassy:/mnt/DirtyData % mv Shared/Wally/Desktop\ File\ Recovery/movies/*.* Movies/New\ -\ Unsorted/

The CLI then started pumping out error messages. The files are being copied from the source to...
