Not your typical "Can't boot on USB" issue

Hi everyone, I'm completely new to TrueNAS and really excited to get a home server.

But, the old computer I want to use for my server won't boot on the USB installer I made with RUFUS. Before you ask, Yes I set the BIOS to legacy mode and changed the priority of bootable devices. The USB stick I am using is working on a different Desktop, and my computer will boot on my Windows Installer USB stick. I even tried with Ubuntu and it booted normally.

I'm using an old, but functioning desktop...

Missing Pool and Datasets after SCALE 22.02.0 > SCALE 22.02.0.1

Hello all,

I've been running TrueNAS in various incarnations for over 10 years, and I have finally run into a strange data loss issue that I could really use some help with. Today, I upgraded from SCALE 22.02.0 to SCALE 22.02.0.1. After the reboot, my NAS took over 15 minutes to come back up. It sat at "A start job is running for Import ZFS pools" for the full 15m8s. After this I was able to log into the system to find that my largest pool (imaginatively named "tank") is missing. In the...

External USB drive solely for passthrough to a VM/docker

I’m a current unraid user but the parity situation with no bitrot correction scares me. I have been watching TN Scale for a year now and think it’s safe to try.

I understand ZFS doesn’t play well with external USB drives and would not do that for my main storage pool.

However specifically I have a lot of drives filled to the brim (99% full) with Chia plots running on my unraid server. It seems foolish to try to limit vdev use to 80% and use these drives - don’t need parity or any...

My TrueNAS plan, 2 years on from learning - comments welcome

Hello All,

I would be keen to have your thoughts and comments, does this server arrangement make sense for me?

I've been using FreeNAS and then TrueNAS in a disposable/learning situation for a few years now, and am closer to making it production. It is a brilliant and rock solid system with the right hardware. All hardware is most definitely burned in, all hard drives are thoroughly tested. I've really been grateful for the help from this community, thank you all.
I've had one...

Can I temporarily disconnect one disk to free a SATA port?

$

I have a hard drive from my computer that I want to import into my pool, since the network share is being weird and not copying things correctly.
I only have six SATA ports on my motherboard, and all of them are filled. (1: boot drive, 2-6: pool drives)
Is it okay if I offline and disconnect one single disk from my pool to quickly import the data from my drive, and then have the pool resilver afterwards?
The pool and drives are all very young, so I'm not concerned with any of them possibly...

ZFS Encryption USB auto unlock and mount with pass-phrase as I do with GLI.

For years I've automatically unlocked on boot and mounted my encrypted geli disks using remotely mounted USB drives as the geli example script below, so If you steel the box without the remote USB's it's useless. So now I need to do the same with the new ZFS encryption since GLI is no longer supported.

Nextcloud Android Access

I'm using TrueNAS 12 Update 8 and the Nexcloud plugin version 23.0.2.

I have the Nextcloud desktop client (version 3.4.4) which is working fine.

I'm trying to use the Android client (version 3.19.1) but I'm having trouble connecting to my server. When I try to enter the URL I get "Could not find host". When I try to access it with the IP address, it allows me to connect, but this causes a problem as the certificate can't be trusted.

I can't seem to find anything on the internet about...

Cannot mirror SSD pool

I had two SSD as a mirror with a small partition used for boot-pool (64G) and the remaining space as a mirror for a pool called SSD. One SSD failed and I had to remove it & now replaced it. I copied the partition from the remaining SSD via dd and could attach one partition to the boot-pool where it works as mirror. But I cannot attach the remaining space as a mirro to my SSD pool. When I checked for UUID in order to do the attach command by /dev/disk/UUID I found out that my UUID from the...

Can't update new TrueNAS Scale install via GUI

Hi, I completed a new install of Angelfish last week and am attempting to install the 22.02.0.1 update via the GUI. It starts to download the image, gets to about 41%, then fails consistently with:

Error: ("Connection broken: ConnectionResetError(104, 'Connection reset by peer')", ConnectionResetError(104, 'Connection reset by peer'))

I've tried this over the course of a few days with no luck. There is nothing wrong with my network connection as I can use wget to download the iso...

Disk Failure on TrueNas Mini X

We got a TrueNAS Mini X diskless last year and bought 5 WD Gold 4TB drives to populate it. We set up a RAID z2 Pool with all of those drives in it. The pool is currently in a DEGRADED status. 1 of the drives (ada4) is showing 72 READ errors and has a status of FAULTED. S.M.A.R.T. test results for ada4 are showing FAILED for the last 6 entries. The drive is less than a year old, but I'm assuming it is bad and needs to be replaced?

I have another TrueNAS system that is a refurbed server with...

What NVMe is best for a fusion pool?

I've been thinking about how to set up a fusion pool, as I've discussed in my last thread where I asked about PCIe adapters. My conclusion there was to wait, but I'm now reconsidering because if I'll want to do it anyway later, I'll get better results if I bite the bullet now than if I add it when the metadata has already been written to the pool because ZFS won't move it all to my shiny new special vdev.

I definitely want to have the special vdev on a three-way mirror of NVMe's on a...

Understanding the System Dataset Pool and it's Default Placement?

Evening -

I just installed FreeNAS SCALE recently - and am impressed. Still getting the hang of things and didn't run into this before - probably because the server I was using didn't have encryption. This install does.

It appears I cannot use a passphrase because the system defaulted to placing the system dataset into the default pool. I'm trying to understand the following:

1) What exactly is the system dataset pool?
2) Was it placed onto the physical drives because I booted off...

Disc serial numbers dont match up

Hi,

Normally, when having a NAS with many discs, you would write down the last 4 serial numbers of the discs and label them on the fronts of the disc bays. If there would be a failure, you can look at the discs config page, find the particular serial number and match it up with the labels.

However, it looks like none of the serial numbers displayed on the disc management pages match up to any of the physical disc serial numbers I wrote down, except for just one disc. Am I missing something...

TrueNas SCALE Windows VM installation id changes on every reboot

I have just reported a bug to IXsystems but I thought I'd post it here as well.

It appears that the installation id for my windows vm is changing every time I start and stop the VM.

the installation ID is visible when typing "slmgr /dlv" into the windows cmd prompt.

It has caused me to have to sign in again to the windows store on every reboot and adds another linked device in my windows store management.

I originally noticed this issue...

UUID changes after every reboot of a VM/Host?

Dear truenas community, altough i realy enjoy truenas scale's virtualization capability, i did notice the UUID of VM's changes, i have software that creates a unique hw id based on the NIC Mac's and the UUID of the bios/motherboard thats being virtualized. So now after every reboot, and change of the UUID at the generated hw id of the license coupling is not valid anymore, and i have to get in touch with the support department to get it valid again which is pretty annoying to say the least...

I'm looking for a better and more future-proof case to replace the cheap and basic one that came with my system. My wishlist is:
  • As quiet as possible
  • Good cooling (I've noticed the drives getting warm in my current case)
  • Solidly built (I've noticed vibrations in the drive cage in my current case)
  • At least 8 spaces for 3.5" HDDs, and ideally 10 if possible
  • Space for 2 x 2.5" SSDs for mirrored boot drives
  • Tower, not rackmount, as I don't have a rack
  • Fits a micro-ATX...

how to...import & access existing data set

Hello- Goal: I would like to recover/access & use existing files that I had (past-tense) on my TrueNAS Core box HDD's.
System Overview Platform: Generic Version: TrueNAS-12.0-U7 HostName: truenas.local
Situation: I built a TrueNAS Core box. It had 2-6TB HDD's administered as mnt/poolONE/ds1. I copied files (about 100GB) to that pool. The pool was administered as SMB, and I could access/use/read/write to those files from my Winders10 desktop PC's. THEN, I...
