I've been a FreeNAS user for about 6 years. I am still using a 2009 version of the software which has been working flawlessly on my network since I set it up on an old eMachine that I had.

Grafana or NetData: Which Do You Prefer?
You guys have probably seen my other thread about Grafana (should be a post or two below this one because I just updated it) and possibly my ticket about NetData's inclusion in FreeNAS. JKH has agreed to look into adding it in since it is nice, but the issue is that it may interfere with collectd since they both apparently want to be "at the bottom of the stack", and that a similar solution was already implemented and ready to go, that being...

Script to control fan speed in response to hard drive temperatures
I don't have sufficient privileges to create a new thread in Hacking or Useful Scripts, so I'll post here.
My FreeNAS box (currently in hard drive badblocks testing) will be idle most of the time. The hard drive temperatures stay low with the case fans at low speed when the drives aren't being heavily used, but they climbed above 40 deg C when under constant use.
The following script uses ipmitool to set the fan speed on some SuperMicro boards to either Optimal or Full, depending on the...

A tale of two datasets and shares
I have two datasets under my main ZFS volume
Audio & Audio2
Setup everything to be identical except for the dataset names.
A weird problem has cropped up.
Using MediaMonkey I can no longer alter the tags (album name, etc) in flac files residing on dataset Audio. No problem doing so on dataset Audio2. I can create files and folderrs on both datasets using Windows Explorer.
Trying to determine if this is a FREENAS or MediaMonkey problem.
Any ideas?

FreeNAS Filer Head
Greetings!
I've been exploring FreeNAS for a couple of weeks now, and I wanted to share some results and ask for some feedback.
I obtained a pair of Netapp disk shelves on the cheap and decided to build myself a filer equivalent. Originally I had tried to pass the HBA through to a VM on my ESXi host, but it didn't work on 6.0u2 or 6.5. (Interestingly it did work on 5.5, but I do not want to roll back my environment.) When I RDM'd the disks to the VM it worked, and I had very nice...

Hi FreeNAS
Hi Guys,
It looks as though you have another convert, but I am going to need some help to get me up and running.
I come from an IT background, but I am now retired and spending my life chilling out on a small island in Thailand.
Over recent years I have built various media servers. I started with a home built server running Windows Home Server, which I then upgraded to WHS2011. When I needed more disk space I purchased a Sans Digital TR4M+BNC drive enclosure which gave me four extras...

Multipath Disks and Disks
I am using a iXsystems Certified FreeNAS device. One of the most common annoyances I have run into is when trying to use a disk that was once used in another FreeNAS box. Of course whenever I do a Google search on what to do I run into the typical stuff that you see all over this forum:
Give yourself absolute power:
sysctl kern.geom.debugflags=0x10
Wipe out the disk header:
dd if=/dev/da6 of=/dev/null bs=1m count=100

Syncthing Jail
I would like to create a generic jail and use wget to install syncthing from source.
I know (and currently doing so) that there is a syncthing plugin - but I have moved away from plugins, and like the ability to control my own updates etc with generic jails. I've done the same with plex, moved away from the plugin to a generic jail.
I can install wget, and use it to pull syncthing down into a jail. And I am happy adding storage, and sorting my permissions out. But what I am struggling with,...

Seagate 8TB SMR Archive used as backup, working great
Thought I'd post an update. My full backups are working great with the Seagate 8TB SMR Archive disk.
It's backing up a RAID-Z2 pool with 4 x 4TB disks, so a single 8TB disk can do the backups. (After I set

Unable to import Zpool
Hi Freenas gurus,
I'm unable to import the zpool by a import volume from webgui or shell.
Last week Freenas suddenly crashed a couple off days after changing a defected hdd. It had 1 unreadable sector, after writing that sector all seems fine but a couple off days later 3 sectors were unreadable and finally 6 sectors. I changed it by the book. Last year i changed a hdd by the book with no problems at all.
Now it ended up in a kdb enter panic.

NFS Shares not working, please help.
Hi everyone,
can anyone help me get NFS share with guest read/write access, I can't get it to work. There seems to be a lot less options in FreeNAS 10 when it comes to shares. I have created vol1 and a NFS data set called media, set permissions to nobody. I have even tried root but I can't access the share on a mac, CentOS or Ubuntu. I can mount the share but get permission denied when trying to create a directory.
Thanks in advance for your help,
Simon

No 9.10 stable train option
Ever since I updated to 9.10.2 (a476f16) the dropdown menu for selecting which "train" does not include 9.10 stable.
I find this quite odd, because you can see from the screenshot that I'm on the stable train but now I don't know what train I'm on and am afraid to update (if there is one).
Did this UI change in the recent update? I thought before that the train listed after "current train" was also listed in the dropdown. Is it not in the dropdown because I'm currently on the stable train?...

Server UDP NFS-clients

Please HELP!
Guys I need desperate help.
I just wanted to reboot my FreeNAS and now it doesn't come up anymore. I have a self built FreeNAS ( https://www.ceos3c.com/2016/08/25/build-skylake-nas-freenas/ this build exactly).
When I want to boot the system, the fans run up, slow down again like normal and the front light is lighting up and after a few seconds it reboots again. I don't get any picture on my screen, no ping nothing.
Please help! My whole data is on it lol.

CAM status: SCSI status error - what does it means?
So I've managed to get past my previous problems and keep working forward towards finally getting my FreeNAS build up and running. I'm finally to drive testing.
So far I've run a short, conveyance and long test on all my drives as per https://forums.freenas.org/index.php?threads/how-to-hard-drive-burn-in-testing.21451/
Well, now I've come to the badblocks test and things were taking a little longer than they were supposed to, like some drives were stuck at under 30% on the first...

Excessive Packet Receive Errors
In my Usenet VM, NetData always complains about hundreds of UDP receive packet errors every once in a while when I'm downloading a bunch of stuff, the issue usually resolves itself within a few minutes but then it happens again. It also complains about the budget queue being over run, but even when I increase the budget queue (which is supposed to alleviate dropped packets apparently) it still drops packets due to errors.
