2 drives reporting SMART errors in FreeNAS but SMART long test produces 0 errors

Setup:
  • FreeNAS 11 VM running in ESXi 6.5 Update 1
  • LSI 9211-8i HBA in IT mode, hardware pass-through to VM
  • 4x 4TB WD Reds connected to the HBA via SFF-8087 to 4 X SATA cable
The HDDs were purchased about year ago and I have been testing them on and off with FreeNAS and other software RAID solutions, but nothing was ever finalized yet and the HDDs were barely used. I had set the project aside since earlier this year and the drives have been sitting unplugged for some...

Pool Question - Wide Z3 for Backups

I am upgrading my production pool.  1 of the 2 6-drive Z2 vDevs will go from 4TB to 6TB drives.  This will also free up some 4TB drives that I can move into my backup pool.

My backup pool is a single vDev 12 disk Z2 vDev.  It is a mix of 3TB and 4TB drives.  I will not have enough 4TB drives to complete the backup pool upgrade.  I am considering, once my production pool is resilvered and running stable, is to destroy and re-configure my backup pool (pucker factor while waiting for...

First FreeNAS Server

I am currently working on setting up a freenas server for the files of everyone in my household, which mostly consists of my video files, family photos and videos, and documents. In the future I intend to build a freenas system with newer hardware but for now I intend to use an existing system running an intel xeon w3530 and 12gb ddr3 ecc memory (I am not sure of the motherboard, just that it is from a dell t3500 workstation). This approach seeks to save some of the upfront cost while still...

ZFS Compatibility between FreeNAS & Linux

Hi All

I noticed from discussions on this forum that @Arwen is using ZFS on her linux laptop, so I decided to give ZFS on linux a shot for my home desktop PC. So far so good, but what about interoperability with FreeNAS ZFS.

Since ZFS is coming from two development streams (FreeBSD/Linux Debian/Ubuntu) am I likely to run into problems if I want to send/receive ZFS snapshots (for backup/restore)?  Does anyone have experience doing this?  Am I likely to corrupt a pool...

Dataset empty after Volume Import

Hi,

So recently my boot device got corrupted during an upgrade (no idea why). Well I thought doesn't matter that much since the data should be untouched. So I quickly reinstalled FreeNAS and imported my Volume through the WebGUI Wizard. Pool showed up instantly and was imported without a hitch. Unfortunately the only thing I saw was a 100G vm_disk in my dataset. ~3TB of files were missing. Any Ideas what could have happened? I'm absolutely clueless. Maybe i can try to restore the config or...

Plex Cannot Find Server

Hey!

Currently on a FreeNAS 11.2 RC1

Got a weird problem with the Plex server plugin in that it can't find a Plex server, despite itself being one. Any idea on how to fix that? Tried reinstalling the plugin / checking mounts and perusing previous forum threads with other people having the same problem, but it's either a rare issue, since I found little to no prior conversation, or one that's pretty impossible to diagnose.

Thanks

getting slow speeds over gigabit

I'm in the middle of moving 15 TB of data from my Synology NAS (DS415+) to my FreeNAS server (11.1U6) and I'm getting only about 300 Mbps (steady). I've always gotten lower than expected transfer speeds with FreeNAS, but never troubleshot it because it didn't serve anything crucial until now. I'm pretty sure the problem isn't the Synology NAS as I've achieved 110+ Mbps transfer speeds with other 1 Gb devices on the network. Based on the environment below any suggestions on getting closer to...

Showing FreeNAS in network

This used to work but now does not. When I would click on network (windows 10) my FreeNAS box would show up and I could go through my shares but after the last few updates (now on RC2) it does not appear. Which setting on either machine must be changed for this to work. Yes I can type the address in which is fine for me but not for other members of the house.

Replacing drive in mirror with smaller one

I have a boot zfspool with 3 mirrored devices. 2 16GB usb drives and one old 128GB SSD.

Unfortunately the SSD just died so I wanted to replace it with another 16GB USB drive (the exact same type of the other already mirrored 2)
But when I try to replace it (in the WebGUI) I get an error that the drive is too small.
Do I need a drive wich is 128GB big? Even if the others are only 16GB?

If so, can I remove the (already removed) SSD from the pool for good and add another 16GB usb mirror?...

Plex plugin using inappropriate IP address, resists change

So I was standing up a temporary plex server to test some things before I commit my main plex server to some upgrades, and I ran into the most annoying problem...  For whatever reason. the system insists on using 192.168.1.1 for the plex jail.  That IP is a reserved IP on my network, so it was free, but NOT available for use.  It is not in the DHCP range, so where did this come from and why?  When I change it, the server just errors out when I try to start it from the plugin services gui...

I’ve followed this tutorial and had next cloud working locally until somewhere around the heading “Let’s Cache”. Now when I try and access the page locally I get this error:

Windows permissions without Windows

I run myfreeNAS webGUI off of macOS.

I setup a dataset for media storage with Windows permissions such that
I could make it into an authenticated CIFS/SMB share for easy drag/drop.

Code:
/mnt/POOL/media/
Permissions: Windows
User: root
Group: public

How do I modify specific permissions without having Windows available
to provide the Windows permissions GUI?

.

I ask because I mounted the dataset to the Plex plugin,
which can see all of the files but cannot transcode them.

I...

Hi folks!
I just started to learn how to use FreeNAS, the best practices of the many things you can do with it and, while toying with my new creature, I asked myself (and tried to find the answers on the web) these three things:

  1. It's better to share the "root" dataset or all of its children? E.g. pool/users vs pool/users/user1, pool/users/user2
  2. Can I have a dataset with UNIX/Mac as share type inside a dataset with Windows share type which is being...
