How Dangerous are High Load Cycle Counts?

Hi everyone,
I've had a couple sleepless nights, so I'm hoping to get some clarity...
A couple of days ago, my FreeNAS pool went into a degraded state. Looking at zpool status, one disk showed that it was removed and several had "too many errors." These were all in the oldest vdevs of my system, plus they were all on the chassis backplane (Rosewill) as opposed to the DS4243s the newer disks are sitting in. Long story short, I narrowed it down to the backplane and moved the disks to spare...

iocage suddenly won't start. mount_nullfs: Resource deadlock avoided

I have transmission in an iocage jail in FreeNAS 11.2.

My fstab entry for that jail had 114 lines.

Everything has been working fine. All directories with a space have /040

When I want to add storage to the jail, I usually just do

echo "/mnt/pool/storagepoint /mnt/Jail/iocage/jails/transmission/root/media/storagepoint nullfs rw 0 0" >> /mnt/Jail/iocage/jails/transmission/fstab

Then I add /media/storagepoint to the jail and restart the jail.

I've done it...

Two internet connections

So, there seems to be some news in the air of fiber with up to 1gbps coming in. Currently I’m on a 40mbps connection so yes that’s an upgrade. But with everything awesome there is a catch. The cost of the new fiber is a lot. So my wish (I hope I can call it one) is have everything in the house, all random iPads, phones, tv, microwaves and washers on the existing 40mbps including the FreeNAS box with transmission and plex on the same WiFi for easier access to home equipment and also get a...

The goal of this build was firstly to provide a strong 6-bay NAS, Plex server and offsite backup for my Primary NAS. Also, it needs to run ESXi in a performant manner, and will host Windows, OSX, Linux guests, as well as a pfSense gateway. The ESXi installation was the pilot project for an ESXi upgrade I am planning for the Primary NAS.

My Nas system works fine , but the system can't reboot. When the system reboot, the process hangs on 'ata2: <ATA channel> at channel 1 on atapci0'. Meanwhile, the FreeNAS system can start from shut down and seems everything is OK.

This is the attach files and my hardware list:

2. intel i3 4170
3. Marvell 9215( Sata controller)
4. 8xsata3 HDD(4 in 9215 and 4 in motherboard)

How far will a config backup get me in the event of a hardware failure?

I'm confused on how much info is stored in the config file that I can export a backup of in freenas.

If I have a boot drive failure (running freenas on an SSD and I hope it lasts for a long time but can't be sure), and I reinstall then import my config, how much of what I had comes back?

My datasets/permissions/users/shares/tasks?

can it do my plugins as well?

how powerful is the config file, and is it a good idea to setup some sort of boot drive backup in addition to exporting a copy...

Cannot set custom Download folder for Transmission and two UDP errors when starting Transmission

Hi,

I'm currently in the proces of switching over to FreeNAS 11.2 and I'm having two issues with Transmission I'm unable to solve.

Downloads folder keeps reverting back to the default settings

I've created a dataset named "Transmission" with a Downloads, Incomplete and Torrents (watch-dir) folder. I created a mount point for this dataset in the "/media" folder in the Transmission jail.

I've tried by setting the "Downloads" folder in the Transmission GUI but it doesn't save it. It...

I just installed another FreeNAS server in my rack (specs below, and I have one running already), when trying to access the Web GUI I get the following message (an image is also attached).

Connecting to NAS... Make sure the NAS system is powered on and connected to the network.
Now I've poked around a bit and everything I've found talks about the IP address changing, older beta builds, config changes or some other networking error. This is a fresh install (several times...

I noticed today a mention to probably not run jails inside a virtualised FreeNAS.

What are the problems that I'd be likely to encounter? currently only have have @danb35 's Heimball jail but i'm planning to move plex/transmition/nextcloud/etc into the vm'd FreeNAS

IBM x3650 m3
dual xeon x5650
92 GB ram
mix of sas and sata drives on an ibm m1015 in it mode passed through to Freenas

Mac clients connecting to FreeNAS - Which dataset share type

$

Hi,

I am quite new to FreeNAS so apologize if that question has already been answered but I couldn't find anything related to it.
I have a network of 80% Mac clients and 20% Windows clients and I am wondering which "share type" option I should use.

I am sharing using Samba protocol only, knowing AFP will be gone soon. AFP is therefore Off.
I am using at the moment Windows share type.
I am guessing "Mac" share type is for AFP protocol but I might be wrong.

Thanks for your help.

Replacing A Failed Single Drive With A Larger Hard Disk

Hi,

I would appreciate comments/confirmation relative to replacing a failed single drive with larger hard disk.

I am running FreeNAS-11.2-U5 on a Dell T20 with four 3TB WD Red drives in a raidz2 configuration. Last night, I received an alert saying that my main pool’s state was degraded and one drive had been removed by the administrator.

I pulled that disk this morning and the Western Digital diagnostics found the drive has lot of bad sectors. Unfortunately, it is 4 months past the...

I bought a Supermicro X10SLM-F off ebay and it had a very old firmware and bios. I mistakenly updated the firmware first through IPMI, then tried to update bios. I rebooted and am caught in an infinite reboot loop, it never makes it to even the BIOS options, nor letting me boot from USB.
The problem is that once the bios got to 100% it was stuck there. Doing some research, I found this Supermicro FAQ which says this...

Will my first build FreeNAS?

Hi everyone,

I'm having problems with my current "storage solution", which is a cheap raid5 chassis with 4x 3TB WD Red HDDs. During PrimeDay I bought some new blurays but copying them onto the storage kind of damaged the file system. After what I've read online, I may have hit an unresolved bug in the ext4 file system, but anyway. Since this is not the first time I have problems with this solution (I already lost all my data once, but the important data was backed up), I decided it's time...

Changing Boot Drive

Good Afternoon all. A noob Question for you. I have read through previous posts and sort of read the docs, so I *think* I have got the procedure right but I would much rather check before screwing the whole thing up.

I have a 60gb Kingston ssdNOW drive sitting in the draw doing nothing so I thought it would be better used as the boot drive in my NAS. From my (very bad) memory the current one is a nameless 16gb drive I picked up somewhere.

If I have this correct the procedure is:-

1) Save...

FreeNAS 11.2 and SMART information

$

I have my FreeNAS box built and am trying to run tests to validate the hardware.

Details of the box should be in my signature.

One thing I have run into is that sometimes when I boot, the SMART information is now available. If I do a restart, the SMART information becomes available. Other times, the SMART information is available from the first boot.

Is this a common issue with FreeNAS?

Thanks!

FreeNAS 11.2 and multiple logins

I have searched for information on the topic of this discussion, and could not find anything. If the manual does answer my question, please point me in the right direction.

Are there any issues with logging in to a FreeNAS box more than once?

I am doing so from the same Windows PC, using the same web browser (Opera in this case). Will this cause any issues?

Thanks!

SMB Mounting and iSCSI

Here are the specs of my FreeNAS setup before i ask my question

FreeNAS Version 11.2
- FMB-1101 Motherboard - https://www.also.com/pub/pdf/Z420.pdf
- Intel(R) Xeon(R) CPU E5-1620 0 @ 3.60GHz (8 cores)
- 16 GB RAM
- 4x2TB Raidz
- 1x1.5TB Single disk
- On Board NIC

So I have my FreeNAS set up with a 4x2TB RaidZ pool. I have shared this pool out to my Windows 10 PC as an iSCSI. I am doing this for Windows application support requiring the drive to be "Logical" and not a...
