SMB will not start. Running 11.2 stable.

SMB worked fine on my first install but I screwed up permissions so bad somehow Freenas wouldnt even start so I reinstalled and reimported my pool.

I've reinstalled twice now with the same result.

Vanilla install smb toggles on. I reimport my pool and add a smb share, it loads for about 30 secs and says "call timeout" real small in the corner. After that SMB will not start. Even if i delete the smb share it still won't start.

I don't get it, im...

Supermicro 846 Barebones (+X9SRL-F) or combo with X9DRi-F?

Should I get the barebones case and get a X9SRL-F as @Chris Moore suggests? Or should I grab the combo with the X9DRi-F?

Here's my plan for the server:
  • FreeNAS virtualized with 6x 4TB NAS drives z2.
  • VMs for lab work.
Questions:
  • I'm not sure if I can run the X9DRI-F with just one CPU? I know there are some limitations on using all PCI-E slots. I'd like this option for power saving.
  • Is the backplane in the 846 -...

Mellanox MNPA19-XTR not detected after reboot...

Hello,


I recently upgraded my FreeNas server with one of these Mellanox MNPA19-XTR ConnectX-2 network cards. I run a direct fiber line from my server to my main desktop. This setup seemed to work perfectly at the start, even after giving the interface a IP and a subnetmask in the range of the other card in my main desktop, everything was still in working order (I even was able to access my shares at amazing speeds :D). There is also a second gigabit connection just to access the internet...

Error after Upgrade vom 11.2-U8 to 11.3: cannot unmount '/mnt/iocage/releases/11.2-RELEASE/root': Device busy

After I upgraded my system from 11.2-U8 to 11.3 I get the following error message when I try to access "Plugins" or "Jails" from the webinterface: "cannot unmount '/mnt/iocage/releases/11.2-RELEASE/root': Device busy"

I've already tried to unmount the mentioned pool manually by:

But I get the following error message:

Immer falsches Tastaturlayout in VMs

Hallo,

ich habe bei freenas in VMs das Problem, dass dort immer das englische Tastaturlayout benutzt wird, obwohl das freenas auf Deutsch gestellt ist und in den VMs (egal ob Win10 oder Ubuntu) auch alles auf Deutsch ist.

Gibts da irgendwie noch nen Trick oder ein Problem mit bhyve?

Ich komm da nicht weiter.

Reducing ZFS cache size?

Hi ,

I have a freenas setup which includes the server being used for replication snapshots, plex plugin jail, and bhyve virtual machines. ( home use and im only person accessing it).

I have 16 gb of ram, of which only 2gb of ram is used for services but a whopping 11.3 is being used for zfs cache- making it fairly difficult to have enough remaining memory .7gb to run virtual machines.

Is there any way to limit the amount used by zfs cache? And if so how? did some lookup already with...

Best way to migrate all my data to different server

I recently built a Freenas Server (thanks again to the community. I read through several threads and documentation over and over and was successful). Anyway, I have been given another Freenas Server that is old and on its last leg. I want to transfer all of the data to my new server. What is the best method to go about doing this? Should I remove the drives from the old server and install them in the new server and import the pool? (Note: my new server is already...

Codec issue

I just shutdown a separate ubuntu server for zoneminder after I thought I was stable on freenas as a iocage install. However I keep getting camera triggers from what I believe is a codec issue. Mind you I have never had this issue prior to the swap.

Any thoughts or ideas?

Machine specs:
Ryzen 7 2700
64gb ddr4 3600
freenas 11.3 u1 installed on an ssd
32tb of drives from a raid with 8tb ironwolfs /sas card
rack mounted with UPS, other than a few reboots has been running straight for over a...

Migrate to new boot disk

Hi,

I want to switch to use a usb flash drive instead of an SD card to boot freenas 11.

I have backed up my freenas.

what is the easiest way to migrate?

can I safely remove the sd card while freenas is running? Dd copy to the new usb. Then insert the usb and reboot?

they are different sizes so my be easier to install a fresh copy of freenas and restore the config to it from the backup?

advice needed to make this as quick and easy as possible.

I just went to update an 11.2 U7 install to 11.3 RC2, which I'm sure was there a moment ago. The updates dropdown in the GUI now lists 11.3 STABLE.... but I don't see an announcement? (the main download webpage still has 11.3 RC2 only).

Pool degraded, no SMART errors

Hello,
I recently replaced all 8 drives in my server with new drives. (4TB HGST to shucked 10TB Seagate Iron Wolf Pros).

I actually had to rebuild the entire Pool to change the block size to 4k, then replicated to the new drives. I did this using two chassis and two LSI cards due to not having enough space in my primary chassis

I did have some weird device reset errors when I had the drives split up, I attributed this to the precarious nature of the setup, and the errors were on my backup...

Greeting all.

I recently upgraded my system to from 9.2 to 11.2-U8 (build report forthcoming, once all is working). I poured through the posts, planned out my hardware and software upgrades, and executed. At this point all of the hardware and software is upgraded. All went very well until I got to the step where I upgrade my boot device from USB stick to mirrored SSDs. With the USB stick, I successfully created a replication task to my local (same machine, using "localhost") backup...

Hi,

I am struggling to figure out whether the error above, which I'm seeing from two different cabled Windows clients, is being caused by something I've done wrong when setting up my FreeNas system
  • HP Proliant ML10 Gen9
  • Intel Pentium G4400 CPU
  • 32GB ECC RAM (Crucial)
  • 4x WD Red 6TB Drives in Raidz
  • Network card identified as Intel i219 (built-in NIC)
I have set this up with DeDupelication on some datasets so am expecting to need to add more RAM, but I've not been...

Do you ever update your server motherboard bios?

After doing some maintenance on my freenas server I noticed my supermicro motherboard is considerably behind.

Version 1 from 2015 and there's been over 10 updates to 2.3 in late 2019.

I looked through the changelog and there is many Intel vulnerabilities and microcode updates.

Do you ever update your bios? I never have as I used to go by 'it ain't broke don't touch it' mantra... And have heard horror stories about bios updates.

But with so many Intel vulnerabilities lately, I wonder...

Warden and iocage jails

I have a Plex jail created in Freenas 9x. Now in Freenas 11.2u8, I haven't been able to update plex unless I create plex in iocage. I have over 4k movies and about 300 TV shows. I have looked at videos on how to create iocage jails for plex, but no videos on how to tranfer or migrate all of my media safely. I have 1 question, can I create a Plex jail in iogage with the same mnt points as the plex in warden jail.
