Dedup Special Drive?

$

With the intro of the special dedup drive, does this make dedup more usable now? Less reliant on memory?

We run almost a 100 terminal servers on a storage server so we are just starting to test true nas and determine if a special meta drive makes sense or maybe start u sing dedup?

we typically run 11 mirrored vdevs, 256gb ram, mirrored zil and a 2tb l2arc with 40gb network cards....

Looking for some more speed! lol

Resilver slower than scrub and gstat report unexpected statistics

Unfortunately I did not collect any data during the specific resilver but the thing is this.

I have a pool of 4 different mirrored vdev made by two drives each. One is 2TB the ohter are 3TB drives. I replaced da7 that was in mirror with da4.

In the last week I had to perform more than one resilver of the same drive because I had to correct some lost data. This has been due to probably faulty power supply, I did not loose so much so no problem.

What I noticed is that the resilver took 36...

Hard drives that write data in overlapping, "shingled" tracks, have greater areal density than ones that do not. For cost and capacity reasons, manufacturers are increasingly moving to SMR, Shingled Magnetic Recording. SMR is a form of PMR (Perpendicular Magnetic Recording). The tracks are perpendicular, they are also shingled - layered - on top of each other. This table will use CMR (Conventional Magnetic Recording) to mean "PMR without the use of shingling".

Boot troubles...

Hi all. I've been running FreeNAS since 8, and have steadily moved my FreeNAS forward. Currently running 11.3 (if I can get it to boot again). The 11.2 - 11.3 upgrade completed, and I thought it would be wise of me to add an additional USB key and mirror a pair in the event of a USB key failure (my boot device). The last one began issuing errors, so mirroring should give me some redundancy. A reboot today, and it doesn't boot any more. I'm left with this on the console...

Hi all, (sorry if I'm posting in the wrong place)

I've got a HP Microserver N54L with FreeNAS installed with Plex plugin.

I'm trying to upgrade the BIOS on my system, following all the steps (https://www.nathanielperez.us/blog/hp-proliant-n40l-bios-modification-guide) soon as i plug my USB stick into my N54L HP Microserver and automatically boots off it, I get

Accessing a NAS From Outside the Network

Hey there forums, I'm relatively new to using networked attached storage and I recently built myself a 12TB NAS.
I'm wondering if there's a way to access the NAS in another city or in another country, sort of like a server.
This would honestly be really helpful for my family as my father works in Europe but my family is based in the United States.

Good afternoon everyone,

since i transferred my only pool to a new usb-stick, my dashboard is completely empty. I have already updated the entry under "System -> System Data Set -> System Data Pool" to the new pool, unfortunately without any improvement. The graphs under menu item "Reporting" work without any problems.

I searched the forums and found some related/similar bugs, but they are all closed, or were fixed with updates. Does anyone know how I can troubleshoot this?
Thanks in...

Drives found but not pool?

Hello folks,

In a series of migration & updating, my pool does not seem to import no longer.

The following happened unplanned across several months (hence the somewhat >WTF< ...)

Machine 1: X11-SSL, ESXi 6.5, passthroughed 9201-16i. Been running for a few years. Last known FreeNAS update 11.2-U7 (as far as I can remember I did the zfs upgrade a few patches ago). This config file was imported into machine 2 successfully.
Then moving drives over to Machine 2: SCE-847, X8 system, with a...

salve carissimi

grazie ragazzi

Through self-learning, I learned that P2P Resilio Sync can be used in FreeNAS, but Resilio Sync is not provided in the FreeNAS-11.3-U3.2 plug-in. Google searches for "FreeNAS resilio jail" to find a tutorial "Resilio Sync in a FreeNAS Jail" released in 2020. In the tutorial operation, the following error appears.

I've done quite a bit of looking into this and I can't really find what I'm looking for so hopefully this helps and if I missed something, please send a link my way!

I built a PC specifically for FreeNAS (here's the build specs: https://pcpartpicker.com/list/7Py9HB ) and I've got it up and running but before I get any further, this is where I'm at: What I was looking for was NAS for all my data - access and save work-in-progress from anywhere since I travel a LOT for work. Bug in S3 service?

$

According to /usr/local/lib/python3.7/site-packages/middlewared/plugins/s3.py, both the access key and the secret key can only contain alphanumeric characters. However, S3 allows / and + in the secret key, and Cloud credentials accepts these characters for S3. Shouldn't the S3 service match the behavior of the actual AWS S3 service?

Okay, I did a search for sr-iov and did not come up with any recent helpful threads.

I have a second instance of FreeNAS running as a VM on Vsphere 7.

The configuration for the VM was initially 2 VMX3 interfaces, and a LSI card passed through. For fun, I switched from the regular pci passthrough, to dynamic pci passthrough. I disabled the virtual interfaces, and passed through 2 of the virtualized interfaces (sr-iov versions), and did the same for the LSI controller.

The LSI...

Bonjour,

How to back up databases and other data using FreeNAS as backup media

$

I’m finally getting around to setting up backups for some of the services and databases that I’m running on my home network. The general idea is to run daily backups to a share on my main FreeNAS box and then replicate for a second and third backup copy. I realize there’s quite a few ways that this could be done, including whether and how to use separate files or snapshots to manage backup retention. I suspect I’m not the first one setting up something like this. I would therefore love to...

Anyway to do this without all the ultra security of SSH keys ??? I'm a 1 man network and have been fighting this for days. I don't really care about security .... if nothing else I'll disconnect internet. I REALLY need to backup my NAS so I can install new drives coming tomorrow, and in the future till I can afford a shadow FreeNAS box. Googled alot to see how to install keys ...

Western Digital binds up self-inflicted SMR wound

If you’ve been living under a rock: WD Red 2TB through 6TB became SMR drives in their EFAX variant, which is unsuitable for use with ZFS.

After the considerable blowback this created, WD have bound up this wound by bringing back the EFRX (CMR) 2-6TB drives and creating a clear branding distinction.

WD Red: All SMR drives
WD Red Plus: All CMR drives (this is the original all-CMR Red lineup, before SMR was introduced into the Red line)
WD Red Pro: Unchanged, all CMR
