RAID 5 and Pool creations

Hi everyone, I'm new to TrueNas and have built my first very basic NAS to cut my teeth. I have repurposed a decommissioned server to build one that is more realistic for my needs. It is a Proliant DL360 G6 with 4 drives set up in RAID 5 (I have also tried RAID 0) and continue to get the warning "A stripe data vdev is highly discouraged and will result in data loss if it fails". Stripe is the only option available. Does anyone have a recommendation on proceeding? I feel like if I set up the...

Unable to connect to SMB share

I've been spinning my wheels getting connected to my SMB shares. I had everything working correctly and had full access except I could not connect to the media share with Plex. Somehow while trying to chase the Plex issue. I managed to get myself locked out of my shares on my Windows machine. I have gone over the settings with a fine tooth comb and continue to come up empty. All of the settings are as they should be according to several YouTube videos and TrueNas data sheets. I can gather...

FreeNAS on Proxmox. What's the current state of play?

I'm in the early stages of planning my next FreeNAS server build and I'm strongly leaning toward going the virtualization route (using an ASRock X470D4U with an M1015 and possibly a PCIe Intel quad port NIC passed through to the FreeNAS VM). My goal is to replace my current main "X10" server (see sig), which in turn would become my secondary backup server. The plan is that in the event that something happens to the new "X470" server, I should be able to just move the disks back to my X10...

User Password & Pool Offline

Finally got back into my server after shutting down to move the rack power. While relieved, I was surprised that my password was not accepted. The ROOT account worked and I got in.
The user and group name was there. The password was missing, but reentered and saved user and group settings. Exited to log back in and the password was not accepted. Used ROOT go in and do it again three times with same result.

I also noticed the dashboard saying the Data Pool is named but offline. Digging...

I updated my bios last night and perhaps I shouldn't. I tried to login to my system today and it was extremely slow. From the ipmi I managed to capture the shot below. Essentially this was repeating over and over. I tried to reboot and it is still very slow. The second screenshot if after I typed reboot from an ssh session that finally loaded. Thanks in advance for the help.

Hi Community,

I have some issues with the NVME ZFS pool performance over 100GbE

The setup:

The Server:
TrueNAS 12.0 U2.1
CPU:AMD Ryzen 9 3900x
Motherboard: X570 Aorus
Memory: 128G
Mellanox 100G SFP
3x 2T PCIE4 NVME (benchmark> 3500mb/s r/w)

The Client:
CPU: i7 9th Gen
Memory: 16G
Mellanox 100G SFP
1x NVME (benchmark> 3500mb/s r/w)

Network bench using iperf3 between client and server:

30~40Gbit/s (although there is a bottleneck somewhere between two systems, but theoretically should do...

How to configure Freenas with multiple network cards?

I have using FreeNas with single built-in 1G network card just fine but notice little slow with 4 different IP's running thru it at the same time.
My FreeNAS using 192.168.1.15, Plex Server using 192.168.1.16, SyncThing using 192.168.1.17 and Nextcloud using 192.168.1.18. They all are in same Jail Pool system.
I bought 2 1G network cards with total of 4 additional network ports thinking I can separate each IP traffic for each physical network card. the installation of the Network Cards...

Plex issues, cant start or server not available when started!

So fresh TrueNAS build all updated to latest. Working great for the most part. Created a test pool and assigned basic permissions to the pool, even "everyone" has access. I setup a NFS share and copied pictures to that NFS from my Linux PC, worked fine.

I then installed Plex and thats where the fun began. The very first time I did this, I got Plex to start and was able to properly view the shared files on other devices on my home network even on different segments/vlans! Then i decided to...

SMB Share - Network Path Not Found

I am having an issue accessing my SMB share on my TrueNAS server. First, I have not had a problem accessing my smb share for many years. This has just appeared.

Of course, Windows is always updating and I do keep my TrueNAS up to date as well. I don't know that it has anything to do with that.

I am running TrueNAS-12.0-U2. I am now unable to access the share over the network (I get network path not found - 0x80070035 error).

I am able to access the shares of my other Win10 computers...

OpenVPN working "Almost!!"

New to the network world other than basic configs and have been trying to get OpenVPN Server up and running on Truenas 12.0-U2 for a connection to my iPhone. Followed an online tutorial recently and am now able to create the connection from my server to the iPhone from outside of my network. I am able to ping my phone from within shell of the NAS, however I can't ping anything from my phone back to the NAS. I have tried a bunch of different things found online, but so far have not hit on the...

11.3 - Netdata Plugin and network chart

$

I'm thrilled to see that a community plugin for Netdata has been created for use in 11.3! Installed it and it works great. However, it appears that the network charts won't work because it's monitoring the jail interface and not the lagg or other interfaces on the FreeNAS server itself. Is there any way for me to fix that? Is this something that might be fixed in a future update?

Thank for whomever created this!

Recent Upgrade to TrueNAS- Network adapter reduced to 100BaseTX

My mainboard is a Supermicro 10slm with 2 Gigabit network connections enabled (igb0 and igb1). While troubleshooting communication with the NAS was slow, I noticed that igb0 reported being 100baseT, which, in turn, explained why iperf reported only getting 96Mbit/s transfer rate. I don't know why this adapter is stuck at 100Mb/s. I was able to swapped the ip address to the other adapter and throughput is now reported at 940Mb/s.

I wonder if this is a coincidence, or something related to...

I have now ordered x 2 4TB wd red drivers I wont to replace them with the 3TB drives. I would like advice on how to tell what drive is faulty. and how to swop the drives over

Running virtual machines in a virtualized TrueNAS host - Should this be possible, in theory?

Hi all,

I run TrueNAS in a Proxmox virtual machine.

While I do not plan on utilizing TrueNAS for virtual machines, for reasons that are irrelevant, I needed to set up an Ubuntu Server VM directly on TrueNAS as I needed a Linux host to have direct access to the storage within TrueNAS.

I have Proxmox set up correctly to allow nested hardware-assisted virtualization with the TrueNAS guest CPU type set to "host". I ran through the wizard to create the virtual machine in TrueNAS. Linux, Ubuntu...

Reversing an extend operation

Hi all,

I have a small NAS for my home just to mess around, 4x4TB IronWolves, SSD boot in a mirror and had another SSD for jails. Today I added an LSI 9211 card, flashed it, all went well. I wanted to mirror the jails pool to a new SSD I hooked up the card and installed (same brand and size).

I somehow thought that the extend operation will do this. Of course, it added the new disk as additional space and striped it. :(

Is there any way to reverse this, or is my only recourse to blow...

Raidz1 4 disk array with 1 failed disk not showing degraded

Hi all, thanks in advance for reading this post and for trying to help.

(Details of full hardware hardware at the bottom of post)

I have a storage configuration of 4 pools of 1 Vdev in each containing 4 drives. Three of these pools are healthy but I have lost a drive in one of them. After a restart instead of a degraded pool, the whole pool is offline. It is recognized in the early "boot" message but the GUI just shows it as offline with no information, unsurprisingly the pool is also not...
